I like the story. Short!

We used this to introduce a Kente Cloth art project after studying some Anansi stories! Love it!

Read this to my sixth grade class during our study of Africa. They very much enjoyed it. Very vivid colors in the book, easy to read aloud. It is based on a true story.

I used this to share with my students 1-2nd graders when we made Kente Cloth designs is art class.

Good story!

I bought it to teach Africa in a preschool. It was a little above my children but it would not be above most of the center. Pictures were beautiful.

This is a great book for kids. I needed it for an international festival where our weaver's guild had a booth. I wanted to show the story of kente cloth. Though the book was used, it was as advertised and was great for my purpose. I plan to share it with others and use it for other projects on weaving and/or Africa.

War is the irreducible fact of history. It simply exists. The well intentioned will never be able to wish it away. At best, what can be done is to prepare for war to thereby deter aggressors. But should deterrence fail, what then? At what point is war justified? What if an act of war cannot be distinguished from a mere threat of war? Or worse yet, from a false threat of war? And once in war, to what extent is its prosecution justified? To what extent should an aggressor be punished before finishing a war? And what about war crimes, can they be justified to defend a just cause? And then after war, who is to be held responsible? Who was the aggressor? Who fought the fair fight? How will former combatants continue to coexist? There are no simple formulas to answer these questions, but "Just and Unjust Was" is a comprehensive, structured guide to these eternal issues.Walzer divides the subject into five categories:I. The Moral Reality of War: War has a moral element as much as it has a strategic element, which is relative to each culture. If there is a war, there is a crime. Regardless of who commits the crime, soldiers on each side have equal rights and obligations for when, how, and whom to kill.II. The Theory of Aggression: From politics to the battlefield, who commits aggression and who has rights to be defended justifies the violence. Prevention and preemption muddy these determinations. War's end and the importance of winning fashion the justice delivered and the guarantees for peace.III. The War Convention: Not all wars are created equally, and thus not all are prosecuted the same. The theory of proportionality enters the debate as does the death of civilians and non-combatants. Asymmetric wars of insurgencies and terrorism complicate the lines of battle, and the balance of violence. Reprisals rear the ugly head of cyclic exchanges of violence.IV. Dilemmas of War: Consider the evolution of war from the days of honor, chivalry, and the fair fight, to the modern imperative to fight the total war with victory at all costs. Consider the ultimate end of nuclear war, and the ultimate threat to deter all aggression.V. The Question of Responsibility: After the dust settles, sorting out the belligerents, and prosecuting those responsible for the crime of war. For the crimes in war, the soldiers and commanders stand for review.Walzer's arguments on given issues are usually thoroughly developed and usually terse, but not always easy to grasp. Every argument has its historical antecedent with just enough background and context without over narrating the events. The only shortcoming of Walzer's style was a propensity to assert moral principles without supporting cultural or historical background. Morals are, even as noted by Walzer, relative to culture. For instance, calling the threat of nuclear retaliation immoral leaves me perplexed. Does he mean that the threat of retaliation should be removed before the threat of nuclear aggression? Whose culture, or whose political persuasion is he speaking from?In sum, if you're looking to get an overview of just war theory without having to dig into primary sources this book is probably the best available.

As a work with a singular focus this is a good book. My only problem, which is a huge one for me, is that this author's analysis hinges on the acceptance of an abstraction as its ultimate foundation for arguments presented. What is that abstraction? That an 'implied' contract exists between state and subject which grants states their sovereignty and justification. Because of this abstraction - which shows up around page 50 - all analysis becomes skewed.

Walzer is graying around the edges, yet he remains a significant tour de force in the world of Just War studies. This seminal work is a sine qua non read for any serious student of the laws of war. Many have rightly accused Walzer of being somewhat vague, however, to be fair he did groundbreaking work where there was a huge gap pf knowledge and largely contributed to our current understanding of how JWT relates to the modern hybrid warfare battlespace.

This book is a bit slow, but it really makes you think. You will be left questioning your morals and values. Not a bad read if you are needing to write about ethics of wartime or argue about the validity of war.

Professor Michael Walzer examines just war theory in a clear, methodical and rigorous fashion. Concrete examples clarify and flesh out the theory. It covers not just conventional warfare, but also several offshoots that have become much more relevant since the 1950: peacetime reprisals, guerrilla warfare, and terrorism. In addition, he dissects the notions of "war crimes" and official/bureaucrat/citizen responsibility for war. These analyses are especially useful as today's violent conflicts become more fragmented and in some ways "messier". Walzer's viewpoint is definitely from a left-of-center perspective (not *far* left), but I think people of any political persuasion would find reading it to be extremely insightful. He doesn't shy away from controversy yet his arguments are always well-reasoned. Highly recommended to both the layman and political scientist/philosopher, especially as we enter the uncertainty of the post-9/11 world.

I am a WW2 history buff and am always interested in new books. This one came up in a recent search and I received it as a gift for Christmas.I am currently about 3/4 of the way through and am enjoying the book. This is one of those books that does a create job sharing the challenges and experiences of the Navy and Marine flyers in WW2.The book covered more than I expected starting with a detailed discussion of the battle of the Coral Sea. It does not really cover Midway and then goes into Guadalcanal.It provides great details about individual aircraft and their pilots and gunners. It provides a real world view into the flying missions and challenges that the pilots faced and allows you to track the careers of specific pilots.Overall, I really like this book and would recommend it to others. In many ways, it is complementary to Hornfischer's "Neptune's Inferno" which covers the Navy's actions at Guadalcanal and is another great read.

Had a teacher who was said to have been a pilot here. He would never mention it. Now I understand. Minimal supplies. Always on the verge of losing everything. Lots of heroism and few real hits on ships. Those that did were critical. Men and planes lost on ill advised missions. All in a battle we couldn't afford to lose. Maybe the book gets bogged down in the pilots and not the action, but plenty of that. Great read.

As the son of a USMC radio gunner in an SBD squadron from '42 to '45, I had to get this book. It is a terrific account of the battles and sacrifices during 1942 by Navy and Marine aviation units. Some military histories are done in a clinical manner providing minute details about the order of battle while others are just stories of the participants. Mr. Moore skillfully blends both together in his accounts of battles mostly in the Solomon Islands in '42. His detailed descriptions of what happened to entire units and individual flight crews in fascinating. There is detail here that you will never encounter in books on this subject. It's a really rich description of how a relatively small groups of aircrew helped blunt the Japanese attempts at expansion. Given how few of these men remain, it is great that their stories have been recorded.

I found the book a very good reference, and offered a unique perspective on Guadalcanal. It covers in great detail the individual members of the air groups on the early WWII carriers, as well as Coral Sea. It is not a chronology, as it doesn't really cover Midway. That said, it really gets into the depths of the daily life of the pilots and crew of those pilots who ultimately played a huge part in holding Guadalcanal, and even to how the lack of food and sleep impacted their daily performance. Definitely worth reading.

I would have rated this book higher, but I felt that the author included a little too much information. I frankly wasn't interested in full rosters of the navy units involved and would have stuck them in the back of the book. The excessive detail got in the way of the story and I couldn't keep up with all of the names the author tosses about. It reads like a Civil War unit history published in the 1890s for sale to survivors of those units. I would consider it a supplementary read and suggest you have a pretty strong background on Guadalcanal and the war in the Pacific before you pick this up. If your father or grandfather flew with these guys it would be delightful to see his name in print and you should buy a copy.

Good work concentrating on SBD units and their pilots. Worth the read.

I never realized how difficult it was for the marines to take an island..

After reading the author's book on Midway, I was excited to hear this one was coming out as I found his Midway book to be really excellent. This one didn't live up to that standard for me, unfortunately. Way, way too many names to keep track of as he provided the name of each and every pilot and gunner for somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 American dive bombers. After awhile, the names all became a jumbled glob in my brain and I just sort of passed over them as I read.I think the idea for this story is a good one, but by limiting it to just the dive bombers I feel a good portion of the story is lost. Speaking of the story, it takes almost half the book before we get to Hell's Island, aka Guadalcanal. Way too much time spent on the early part of the war since the book is marketed as a book on Guadalcanal, but the author was trying to set up some background. Just wish he hadn't taken so long to get to the main part of the book because I was beginning to get fatigued by all the names and the mad jumble of units which are mentioned in the narrative.For those of you who like oral history, this book is full of personal quotes and stories from many of the aviators mentioned in the book--this is the real high point. You get to sit right in the cockpit with many of the pilots and know what what they were thinking as they plunged down on a Japanese carrier or were trying to dodge Zeros and anti-aircraft fire.The book could have used a little bit better editing to help with the narrative flow, and how Admiral Raymond Spruance's name popped up in the middle of a naval battle off Guadalcanal for no reason is definitely a mystery. Overall, I'd give it 3.5 stars as it's a great testimony to the men and machines which helped turn back the tide of Japanese expansion in the early part of the war in the Pacific.

good introduction to the subject

This is an excellent book informing the American consumer how he is being fleeced by the title insurance industry.In many states thousands of dollars are charged for a title policy when a home is purchased.As the author peels off some of the mystery behind the title process, it becomes apparent that the consumers combinedignorance and lack of will to demand a change has resulted in a very unfortunate situation where we are being bilked tothe tune of billions of dollars. Unfortunately in many states even the local govt is in on the act.This book is a tremendous education for any homeowner on the ins and outs of title insurance. A reader can only concludethat this element of the home ownership process is just plain unethical. The author provides numerous examples of howthe consumer is being bilked. Here are some examples: 1. The overall liability for a title insurance company as a % of premiums collected is in the low single digits. Compared to any other reasonable insurance business where the liability is much much higher. So where are the billions of profit dollars going? 2. Why does an individual who owns a home have to again pay the title charges each time he refinances the mortgage??? 3. Why is the homeowner paying the fees to purchase the title for the mortgage company as well as for self?? 4. Why is there a clause in the title papers which dramatically minimizes the actual liability that the title insurance company has in the case where there is an actual problem?? 5. Why does the title industry refuse to provide statistical data on their revenues/ liabilities/ costs...etc, yet any mainstream insurance industry is mandated by the law to do so? 6. Why are the costs still the same if not higher even though much of the title process is now automated and the title agent with the press of a key can complete the research process in a matter of a few minutes instead of hours? 7. Why are the costs of a title so high when much of the automation work was done by offshore workers?? 8. Why is the cost of a title for a brand new subdivision house the same as it is for a house that has changed hand 10 times?The author is absolutely right to call the title insurance industry a cartel. Even many states talk big about how they stand behind theircitizens and yet are spineless enough to work in collusion with the title industry to maintain high prices. An example is Texas, wherethe title fee is fixed to around $2600 by the state (before all the other add on charges).Iowa stands out as a model of how private and state entities can successfully compete in the market with regard to titlepolicies. They know how to take care of their people. Also, they are a beacon of light informing us clearly that there issomething very wrong with the title process. A title for a house up to $500,000 costs about $100 when taken from the IowaState Title company and yet the state is still making a profit! And surprise.....the private title insurance companies also compete in the state and charge similar amounts for a title. Now, do you seriously think a private title company would compete in a marketwhere they were losing money? (Just look at Obama Care to validate your answer). Now just think how ridiculously high the profitmargins are for a title company.The media will hound every business owner who dares to charge high prices during a hurricane. Even the govt will go aftersuch businesses. Yet in this situation the media is silent, the govt is in collusion with the title industry, and the average American paysthe price by being forced to cough up thousands of extra dollars in the process of buying a home.We really need to eliminate this very unAmerican process and bring the costs of a title policy to a reasonable amount. But itwill only happen if the consumers raise their voice. This is a very well researched book by an author who in the process has done justice for the American people. He has armed us with the facts, now we need to do something about it.

1. I am positive there are abuses taking place in the industry2. State regulation and pricing are WIDELY varied. Having purchased homes in Indiana, title insurance was cheap, efficient and valued. The same cannot be said in Texas. The cost is ABSOLUTELY BURDENSOME.3. Reform and greater oversight are absolutely required.Having worked outside the US in real estate, the author must address the comparative costs of home acquisition in the US compared to other countries. Though a consumer is charged for title insurance benefiting both the lender and purchaser at the time of closing; the long term cost of money in the form of interest rate is lower as a result of credit enhancements, such as title insurance, widely available in the United States that allow money to be available at a lower cost to consumer.Lenders that cannot access credit enhancements at a low cost to the consumer, price the title risk into their loans. So, as an example, instead of a loan being available at 6% for 15 years; lenders will add a quarter point to the loan for title risk and make the funds available at 6.25% for 15 years. To have a truly meaningful review of the title insurance industry, there must be a discussion of the long-term cost of additional interest consumers avoid by paying a one-time premium.Maybe one of the key reforms that should be undertaken is to significantly reduce the cost of title premium paid at the time of a refinance. This is one of the most objectionable practices I see daily in the title industry.The author mistakenly argues that title agents retain too much of the title premium when issuing a title policy, especially when compared to property and casualty insurers. Such a sweeping statement cannot be maintained when comparing states and the wide disparity between percentages retained by agent and amounts remitted to underwriters. There are many states in which the agent ultimately takes the risk of writing the policy and justifies the agent keeping more of the premium.If an agent makes a mistake in searching the property that causes a loss, by contract the underwriter will settle the loss with the insured. However, if the agent's negligence is the cause of the loss, the agent will have to pay the underwriter back for actual loss and expenses associated with the claim pursuant to their agency contract. This fact alone makes meaningful comparison to property and casualty insurers impossible. To quote loss figures of $.47/$10.00 as evidence of overcharging laughable and misguided.I am confident that figure is close to accurate for underwriters, but is net of the underwriter's salvage from agents and those individuals who actually are responsible for paying the loss. To accurately gauge the claim ratio, the author must look to the amounts paid by agents as loss to gain a clearer picture of how much goes out in the form of loss and loss adjustment expenses paid by the industry to claimants.Again the author shows why his lack of any meaningful experience in the industry is a glowing weakness in his book. Texas, cannot be used so widely to condemn the industry in the other 49 states.There are many other instances to point out the author's lack of understanding of the function title agent's play...but that is the topic for another book.

Everybody loves to bash insurance companies except when they need to be paid. The author seems to think that the customer is being fleeced because of exceptional profits over a few years when it is true that premiums went up with house prices while claims as a pecentage naturally reduced (do the math!)So now we have 50% drop in home prices in some states and overall title premiums have dropped over 40% (a combination of less originations and lower house prices) we see a title insurer going bankrupt (LandAmerica) and all major title insurers had losses in 2008 as claims went haywire on top of lower premiums - some fleecing!!The key measure here isn't claims/premiums it's all expenses/premiums or combined ratio. In this industry the cost of the title plant is extremely high and typically the combined ratio has been in the 89% to 93% range (depends on efficiency & scale) and was well over 100% in 2008. A good profitablity measure for shareholders is Return on Equity and Fidelity's is usually between 8% and 18% but was negative last year and is currently just 4% compared to a cost of equity around 10 or 11%. Not so profitable as to be fleecing anyone

I purchased "The Private Equity Playbook" by Adam Coffey and, frankly, I couldn't put it down. As a former owner of a nationally recognized middle-market service company. I wish that I had this book a few years ago. The author states that his book is a primer on the private equity business, but I believe that it is much more--I've read other books on the subject, but for brevity, de-mystification and just plain enjoyment this one beats them all--by a country mile.Coffey is a maverick. He sees himself as a blue -collar CEO/ He left home at 17. After a stint in the Army, he worked as an engineer and then changed to the business side , rising to middle-management with General Electric. Private equity recruiters came calling and he listened. For the last 20 years, Coffey has been President/CEO of three different national private equity backed companies. Each company has grown exponentially under his watch. And, he tells you how.The author likens the experience to building a winning team. He introduces two players , "Josh" and "Rose" ( a mirror of his former self ). Josh is the CEO of a middle-market service company. He has built the company into a recognized leader in it's field, and is thinking about selling out. He knows little about private equity and wonders if this is a viable exit strategy.--Rose is a " Fortune 500" middle-market executive who gets calls from private equity recruiters looking for a CEO/COO in a private equity backed middle-market company. She is doing well now, but wonders whether she should make a career changeThe heart of the book is Coffey's recounting of his own journey in the problems that he faced and decisions that he made. This book is an easy, insightful read geared mainly for two types - 1) Fortune 500 leaders contemplating a switch to a private equity (PE)-owned middle market company, or 2) the business owner looking to sell to a PE firm. The content is very accessible to anyone with a basic business acumen; Coffey's plain speak breaks down the landscape, operating mindset and keys to maximizing outcomes with PE firms. The paradigm presented is the reader is an athlete preparing to play a different sport (similar to a baseball player learning cricket), and it is divided into sections supporting that paradigm. There are nuggets of insight on nearly every page, and you're left feeling mentored by a pro. Required reading for anyone climbing the corporate ladder or selling their business to private equity.

While the author's primary audience is the the CEO or Executive, this is a must read for anyone in middle management whether your still climbing the ladder or not. Whether your with a big firm or a small outfit, you never really know when the company may be sold, and its very likely it could be to Private Equity. Mergers and Acquisitions are occurring at an increasingly rapid pace, and to Mr. Coffey's point, soon over 50% of those will be through PE firms.Understanding the shifting focus of both Ownership and Senior Management will help you direct your goals, strategies and decision making to be aligned. Having worked for both privately owned firms and PE owned firms, I wish this easy to understand tool was available earlier in my career. When other managers and employee's have a better understanding of the why's of decision making, such as what fall's above or below the line, the benefits of consultants, focus on EBITDA and the lifespan of typical hold periods, it creates more buy in on executing on those strategies. I highly recommend you make this part of your reference library, as I can already tell this will be a book I'll refer back to again and again.
