About the Author

S. Yates has not only walked more than 6,000 kilometres / 3,700 miles on European pilgrim routes in Spain, France, Italy and England, but has also helped pilgrims as a hospitalera voluntaria in more than 20 pilgrim refugios on the Way. She helped in Spain to train others for this task and providing continuous further training for them, especially with focus on First Aid, History of the Camino de Santiago, and Spirituality. Additionally, she has hands-on experience of renovating old houses into new pilgrim refugios and participated in "pilgrim preparation days" in England. She is, together with her husband Rev. Ricky Yates, a member of the Confraternity of Saint James (Great Britain). She walked her first Camino from Roncesvalles to Santiago in 1999 and in the following years made foot pilgrimages to Rome and Assisi as well as walking regularly the Camino in Spain and France and taking care of pilgrims as a hospitalera. She now lives in the beautiful city of Prague and looks forward to walk The Way (Camino de Santiago) this year yet another time. Daphne Hnatiuk walked the Camino Francés for the first time in 2003, where she met S. Yates in Spain, and was infected with the incurable "Camino and Hospitalera Bug”. Since then, she has spent many months over the past 10 years in Spain as both a pilgrim and a hospitalera voluntaria. She has walked Camino routes north, south, east, and west in Spain as well as in Southern France and Northern Italy and can often be seen with her camera and pen and paper in hand, updating English language guide books / web pages and taking pictures while walking the Way. This is a short, useful book with the occasional clever line or interesting anecdote to help you start preparing for your pilgrimage. Though the information could be found in forums or blogs, here it is gathered together for an easy read. A lot of the information is basic preparation for people who have never done or researched a long-distance hike before. If this is you, this book is for you, just don't buy the paperback like I did. Buy the cheaper kindle version.I do have one problem with the suggestions in this book. I have not hiked The Way before, but I disagree with the author's recommendation for footwear. Hiking boots are heavy! There are many who believe that the support that they provide actually increase the chance of injury from a fall because they restrict natural movement. Also, waterproof shoes never stay dry. They hold in water and sweat, then take forever to dry. This is why people who thru hike places like Pacific Crest Trail tend to wear trail runners now. These running shoes grip well, breathe, dry somewhat quickly, and are super light. The downside is that trail runners don't last as long, but they should last longer than the 780km of The French Way. Perhaps this form of shoe wear is just not popular in Europe yet or at the time the book was written (published in 2013). I'm currently deciding between trail runners and broken in hiking sandals for my walk this summer. This is just my opinion, as the saying goes "hike your own hike."Overall, I recommend that future pilgrims read this. Buen Camino!Update:I noticed on my Camino that most Americans under 30 were wearing trail runners, and were quite happy with them. My feet were happiest with socks and sandals. A great look I know, but hey I'm happy when my feet are happy. I suggest reading the book still. It was useful in prepping for my Camino, just remember to listen to your body and enjoy the journey.

I found this book to be easy to read and I liked the format. If you have never backpacked, you will find it very useful. If you are an experienced backpacker and traveler, you probably don't need this book.I agreed with the writer on packing light, but we differed on a few subjects. I found my headlamp to be very useful for packing my stuff. Some pilgrims don't arise till late and it's nice to pack up without turning on the overhead light.Also, do pack a LITTLE emergency food, especially for day 1 if you are going from St. Jean to Rosensvalles. It's a long day and starting out with some snacks is a great idea, as, yes, there ARE stores in Spain, but there are some long stretches without any stores.

The authors have walked the Camino multiple times, as well as done volunteer work with pilgrims. It's very clear that they know whereof they speak in this book - you really get expert advice.The authors have a sense of humor about the Camino that is refreshing. I found this guide very helpful because it addresses how to pack, how to choose a backpack, footwear, clothing, and all the other items that will be necessary for the Camino de Santiago. It answers many questions that new folks that want to walk The Way would have, like myself.This is not a guide that will show you which route to take, there are many, or what the mileage is between stages but a more practical guide of "how-to" do the essentials, prepare the items that you will need, and what to expect as you walk. Myths are dispelled and a common sense approach is used throughout the book. I love the little anecdotes from other peregrinos (pilgrims) that are sprinkled though the book. It helps to drive the point home to use common sense and pack light.You could find this information in the many forums that are out there but this book makes it so easy to get that same information that I wish I would have had it when I first started researching. It would have saved me a ton of time. Do yourself a favor and buy it. It makes for a great read as it is very informative but not in a dry manner, as sometimes guides can be. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to do their own Camino de Santiago.

While this book requires a modest mathematical background, it is critical to understanding how markets work and how academic economists have resisted critical changes to their fallen field. This book will prove to be a classic once advocates of Rational Expectations are swept away. For those of you who have seen "The Inside Job" (a wonderful film), you might enjoy reading about the most critical alternative to the Rational Expectations Hypothesis. Mark my words: Professor Roman Frydman will have the last laugh.

"Imperfect Knowledge Economics" has as its central tenet that most modern economic models are flawed because they are based on the idea that people always act "rationally" (i.e. we always have perfect information, we never suffer from external constraints, and our goals are always to maximize economic value). The book then proposes a new way to think about economics, suggesting that because people act as people the best that economists can do is to make vague general predictions about the future.Of course, to any non-economist who pays any attention to economic forecasts, all of this is met with a resounding "DUH". The one nice thing about this book is that it hopefully will be read by other economists, and get them to finally realize what most of us have already understood for quite a while, that economists are often the last ones to actually understand what *people* will be thinking, feeling and doing - and of course *people* are ultimately the driving force behind economic markets. (For example: witness how long it took for economists to start saying the word "recession" during this spring of 2008. It turns out that spending data show that consumers knew that poor economic times were coming all the back in the late fall of 2007. Somehow the economists were the last ones to figure this out.)Probably interesting if you are an economist, or you need to deal with economists on a regular basis (certainly if you need to *argue* with an economist). However other than that, its not going to be all that useful for the rest of us as we already know, understand, and have seen the authors' main points for quite a long time.

Take away message: stop searching for an alternative to fuel your sugar addictionPros:- discussion of all low or no calorie sweeteners- description of the effects of sweeteners on different body systems- highlights the importance of gut biome and the effect of sweeteners on itCons:- repeats numerous statements/claims throughout the book- draws some conclusions that aren't supported by the data presented- lengthy anti-China rant (seriously what was that?! )- science may be presented in a non-approachable way for a casual reader (made it better for me but might be a deterrent for some)I would recommend buying this book as it discusses the uncomfortable truth we've all been avoiding.A new mindset is worth the price and short time it takes to read it. However, you may end up skimming over some of the sections.

I have been on a low carb diet/paleo diet for 2 years but gain a bit of weight(I was not over-weighed), so I put myself on a ketogenic diet for the recent few months. I read some keto recipe books and started baking with stevia, erythritol and Lo Han extract, thinking that those should be better than honey or maple syrup because they are "lower in carbs". I had long been skeptical of these sweeteners but a large keto community was supporting these. So I think they should be fine and different from aspartame etc, as they are "natural". Oh, I have so wrong! Thanks Bruce Fife for this wake up call! After all, sugar was a "natural product" extracted and purified from sugar cane. And flour, rice are also "natural" from plant source. Until we found that we over-eat sugar and grains(without most of us being aware of it) that so many people fell so ill. I'm going to quit using these artificial sweeteners now.

I love Bruce Fife's work and The Stevia Deception has been very helpful in my own life and my (former) use of stevia as a sweetener in tea. I was diagnosed with prediabetes years ago and introduced to stevia as a healthy and safe alternative to other sweeteners by my practitioner and used it for years. I started reading articles by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne ("The Paleo Mom") and other researchers questioning the safety and health of using stevia, and then my doctor said that it could be causing problems with my blood sugar and hormones and suggested I stop using it. Then I discovered The Stevia Deception and that confirmed my decision to quit. I didn't realize how addictive it was until I quit either. It was really helpful to read about Dr. Fife's experience with stevia and he includes a lot of research too. Some of the pictures were useful to the extent that I already knew those knots. The descriptions were useless. Just repetition word for word for each knot.

This book showed knots but not a good 'first-time' or 'beginners' book

This was less book more pamphlet. The pics were small and in black and white and the "directions" were url links that you can't click on because, you know, it's a BOOK. Very weird and very useless. Returned.

I remember watching my sister make jewelry on a board with nails and beads and string in the 70's. She was using Macrame to make and sell jewelry. This book is full of pictures with detailed instructions on how to make the different knots.

All photos. No written explanations. Same text which each photo. Photos too small and cannot figure out what is what, as all the yarn, in most photos, is the same color.

I love travel books. I know in the age of the internet they may seem non-essential; gone are the days of ending up in a city you have never been to and needing help to locate a hotel or the bus station. But to me, they still serve important functions: getting you excited about possible destinations, finding a spot you might not have found otherwise, giving you a rough map of where some basic things are located that you can refer to as you wander town, and most importantly providing some context, history, or information about a city/area. I have used all the major guide books (Lonely Planet, Moon, Fodor's, Frommer's, Rough Guide, etc.) over the last 20 years and this is the worst, most useless one I have ever seen. It contains a few (maybe 2 or 3 at most) listings for hotels and places to eat for some places. That's it. Yes, that is all. Maybe 2-3 sentences about a town/city, but nothing beyond that. In the age of the internet what possible reason is there for this book to exist? A simple trip advisor search (which is free, unlike this book) will turn up detailed reviews of 15x as many hotels AND let you book them. So the purpose of this book? I have no idea. If I had seen this book in person, I never would have bought it.

I work in an office. I sit behind large double monitors all day long. I daydream in glitter. I wanted a big book with beautiful, museum-quality or Liz Taylor-sized jewels and I got it. The pictures in this book are beautiful. The handicraft of some truly ancient jewelry pieces is amazing. What Pharoahs, Emperors, Kings and Queens wore are spectacular.Makes a great coffee table book.I bought this used. The condition described by the Seller was as it arrived. The book was in very good condition, no tears, folds, like new. I saved some good money buying used from at Amazon.If you go straight to the gems section at museums, if you stand in long lines to see special exhibits of jewelry from Indian moguls, Russian royalty, Faberge, Cartier -- go ahead ... buy this book.

Beautiful book, with tons of eye candy and great inspiration for jewelers. Very good explanations and background on the pieces.One very interesting feature of this book is that there are several images of the portraits of the original owners wearing the jewelry pieces which reference current photographs of the actual piece as it is today.Big book, with lots of beautiful pictures and interesting text. Good description of the materials used to create the jewelry.Recommended.

This is a great book on jewellry through the ages and already I been inspired to try some designs, based on the ancient pieces presented here. One can only look in awe at the "acquisitions" made by the 19th century explorers and hope one day common sense will prevail so that some works can make their way back to where they should be. In the interim I think we should be happy that such wonderful items are in one place where they can be viewed at leisure.

Wonderful coverage of jewelry throughout history and from all over the world; it's much more than I expected for such a low price! The pieces selected show such artistry and workmanship, and are very well-photographed (eye candy!). This is an awesome book that I will continue to enjoy for years to come, and highly recommend to anyone who loves looking at different styles and designs of beautiful jewelry.

I also borrowed this book from the library a lot. It has a lot of great pictures of jewelry from the past. With the techniques I learned from "Creating your own Antique Jewelry", I'm able to make a lot of the jewelry from this book. I've also found that a lot of people like the old antique jewelry. Great for sales.

Fantastic photos, prints. My only gripe: the content focuses mostly on western jewelry. It could be more comprehensive.
