Review
"Weaving biblical examples of gender nonconformity and transformation with the stories and voices of contemporary trans Christians, Hartke’s approach is both pastoral and prophetic as he addresses harmful Christian theology that has been used to further marginalize and exclude trans people. Hartke’s scriptural basis for a trans-affirming theology offers a healing balm for queer and trans people who have ever questioned that God loves them based on “what it says in the Bible,” while challenging progressive Christian communities to center trans perspectives in their efforts to become truly open and affirming." —Sojourners

This is the book I wish I had a year ago as I was coming out to my old church. It is a great primer for what we mean when we say someone identifies as trans and what the Bible might or might not say about that. It takes the complex issues around affirming theology and the stories of trans people and combines them into a quick and easy to read book.If you are a trans Christian, or just a Christian, looking to understand more about those who are so often pushed out or ignored by faith congregations this is an excellent place to start. Trans lives of faith are often misrepresented or ignored in today’s culture and this book could not be more timely for those looking for a deeper understanding beyond the culture wars and media sensationalism. Yes, you can be trans and hold onto the precious, hard-earned faith that gives you and so many others strength and hope.
This book is something the church desperately needs right now. Austen writes with such wisdom and grace, providing space for those who aren't informed while also encouraging those who are questioning their gender identity and wondering if they still have a place in the church.I particularly appreciate how conscious Austen is about sharing his platform with other trans people, especially people of color. He elevates their stories and in doing so, demonstrates that there is no one "right" way to be trans and definitely no one "right" way to be trans and Christian.I wish I could convince everyone I know to read this book.
So so good. From explanation of church values to thoughtful discussion of the eunuchs, Austen Hartke presents all with a wisdom I wish I had when I came out to my church. Definitely recommend for religious folks, LGBT+ folks, and LGBT+ religious folks.
In "Transforming," author Austen Hartke combines biblical scholarship, personal anecdotes and interviews, and a conversational style to argue passionately for the welcome of transgender people into communities of faith. What is most unique and important about this work is that it invites the reader to consider ways in which scripture is realized through gender diversity; ways in which the inclusion of trans Christians--with respect for their voices and lived experiences--can give an entire community new understandings of grace, abundant life, and the beauty and diversity of creation. This is an inspiring, insightful read!
Wow. This book is much needed for the conversations of today.Austen vulnerably shares his story as a transgender male who is also a Christian. Religious circles are not known for their acceptance of minorities. Thank you for your courage, Austen. From a psychology perspective, I already knew that those who identify as LGBTQIA+ are more likely to attempt and complete suicide. These statistics are a red alert for the culture that we have both in secular and Christian communities. There are people in so much distress that they see suicide as the only way out of the daily tension that they live with over their sexuality, gender identity, or gender expression."Transforming" offers a new perspective to Christians who are used to the typical two gendered culture. I am still figuring out what I believe theologically, but research is important and I appreciate Austen for sharing his story. Above all, every person is worthy of love and respect. Transgender Christians who come to any church should be welcomed and loved. Thanks, NetGalley, for the read.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. Hartke's work, begun when he was an Old Testament seminary scholar and continued through years of freely provided online content, culminates in this incredible text that makes the Scriptures accessible again to those it has been used against. He masterfully interweaves biblical accounts with the experiences of contemporary trans and non-binary Christians, applying both his background in biblical interpretation and his compassion for the care of others' stories. The title "Transforming" may have started as a reference to "transgender" but what Hartke has accomplished here is an exquisite rendering of story and scholarship that has the capacity to transform its readers (cis, trans, and nonbinary) *and* the whole church, if we only dare to listen.
As a trans person and Christian, this book is my go-to recommendation to help people deepen their understanding of our communities. Austen has written with theological depth, accessibility, and in a spirit of collaboration so that numerous voices are included. I can't say enough about why this book matters and what a great job he has done with it. It's a must-read for every cis person seeking to be an ally to trans people in churches and for any trans person longing to make connections between their gender and their faith.
This book is so authentic, honest, vulnerable, accessible, and I could go on and on. It really helped broaden my understanding of gender-fluid affirming theology, and I am so grateful for Austen’s work!
