Ellis Valmont, a headstrong young lady of Spanish and French descent, finds herself nursing a handsome young bilingual soldier back to health. As Ellis nurses him, she discovers the soldier may hold very important secrets- but on which side does his loyalty lie?This novel hit the sweet spot for me with frequent references to Ellis’s great-grandmother, Maribel Cordoba. Maribel’s story was told in The Pirate Bride, a wonderful story, also by Y’Barbo. Every mention of Maribel’s name brought flashbacks of that vicarious adventure and how much I enjoyed it. This in turn, increased my enjoyment of The Alamo Bride. Still, I think this novel can stand on its own if one hasn’t read Y’Barbo’s previous tome.I enjoyed seeing the relationship development between Ellis and Clay. Ellis is quite the spitfire (like her great- grandmother, Maribel) when she decides that she wants to do something. We see that same personality trait as Ellis deals with her beloved Grandfather, as well.I was really impressed with what a frightening time in the Texians’ history this would have been to live. Y’Barbo kept me feeling off-balance right along with her uncertain characters.Quotes:“I don’t believe in luck... The Lord takes care of us in His own way. If we manage to have something go our way, we figure it’s because it is His way.”“In times of war, not all friends were truly friends. And sadly, not all family escaped the title of enemy.”I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. The series, for those who don’t know, is written by various authors, starting with Kimberley Woodlouse’s novel titled The Mayflower Bide. Following that there are the five novels: The Pirate Bride, The Captured Bride, The Patriot Bride, The Cumberland Bride, The Liberty Bride, and coming in April 2019 is The Golden Bride. Each novel is unique and filled with adventure, mystery, and romance along with faith of the characters.Every one of the previously listed stories I have read and enjoyed for different reasons. The Alamo Bride took me a few chapters to become engaged but was still worth reading. Here, the lead female character is known mainly by her shortened named Ellis. Her personality is one of stubbornness, strength, knowledge of herbs and healing along with courage.The story is not set when the battle of the Alamo is taking place. Readers will be lured into the story by a man from New Orleans who is on a presidential mission. However, harm comes to him and not only is his life in danger but so is concluding the mission. Ellis and her family don’t know if they can trust this man, as he is having memory issues and they aren’t sure which side he stands with, Santa Anna or those loyal to Texas.The book was for hard to get into but once I did, it was good. I thought the story would take place at the Alamo and during the fighting. There are individual skirmishes, but the tale focuses on Ellis and the man who has a mission. It is worth reading and enjoying, and I look forward to the last book in the series to see how this is all going to conclude!

This is Kathleen Y'Barro's second book in the enjoyable "Daughters of the Mayflower" series. It begins with the fictional family tree, linking this story to the others, a letter to readers about background, and Psalm 91--which is also woven throughout the adventure. The reader soaks up Texas history and setting back in the 1830s while being caught up in an intriquing drama. The book ends with "Bent History: The Rest of the Story."

I have read a few books in this series and unfortunately this one is my least favorite, which is surprising because my favorite was The Pirate Bride by the same author. Our main characters Ellis and Clay are both great but unfortunately there’s very little going on in the story. For about half the book Clay is recovering from injuries and Ellis is taking care of him. As a young woman she is obviously wary of this stranger and suspicious of his loyalties. About two thirds of the way in the book they finally trust each other and head out to find Ellis’ brother who is believed to be taken captive. Ellis has a delightful grandfather who was a fun character but there is no way he would allow the two of them to head out together. It would have been a violation of propriety and he very much believed in protecting her reputation. I wish there had been a better plot point for this. After setting out they are very quickly separated and the story moves quickly with battles mentioned at too rapid a pace to follow. There is very little to learn in the way of history in this book. It’s not boring but not exactly riveting if that makes sense. I wish these characters could have had a more interesting story because they are both solid characters. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"Caveat emptor"/buyer beware.For those fellow customers who want to buy this item because they intend to use it in a Shakespeare class on the college grad school level. Do not, I repeat do not waste your money.Let me explain, this edition does not contain any "glosses," notes in the margin which clarify word use or other language issues. It does not contain any footnotes at all. So there is nothing which you can use for cross-referencing among the plays, this is particularly important when studying Shakespeare's "histories," as they are all related until one continuous story when put together. This edition of the complete works also does not contain any kind of a general introduction about the person of William Shakespeare, his life or historical times. This edition does not contain an introduction to any of the plays.Honestly, this is the first addition of "The Complete Works" that I have ever seen that does not contain all of these things. Some editions I have seen in the past, have better glosses, footnotes and intros that others but they have all had them.I wanted this edition because it was divided into the four logical volumes, comedies, tragedies, histories, & romances & poems, and I wouldn't have to carry around one huge book. However, to charge very nearly 50 dollars, for edition of the complete works of William Shakespeare, that doesn't have margin notes, footnotes and contextual introductions, is a complete release the money. Even if you don't intend to use this to study Shakespearean school, and even if you think you are very familiar with Shakespeare's work, margin glosses footnotes and other contextual information is still very important to remind yourself of salient points of information. You would be better off buying one of the older paperback editions edited by Prof. David Bevington for example of the University of Chicago. There is a six volume and four volume set of the works available. In those all contain the same study aids, I have described above, better in his comprehensive one volume edition of Shakespeare. There also fine editions by the Royal Shakespeare Company available, and Pelican books. Again buyer beware don't waste your cash

I purchased the Kindle version of this book. I bought this particular version of the Complete Works because it comes with free audio, which is excellent to have handy when reading Shakespeare. However, the Table of Contents only exists for the first part of the book--the tragedies. To read a particular play that's a comedy or history (or any of the sonnets)--in other words, 75% of the book--you have to click onto the last "chapter" listed--Titus Andronicus--and page through to find the work you're looking for. What a HUGE pain! If you're buying this on Kindle, might want to find a better version, unless you plan to simply read the book cover to cover every time.

I am a huge Shakespeare fan! HUGE!! I remember toting the "Portable Shakespeare" literature book around with me wherever i went. In 2014, after looking at my dog-eared version of limited collections - i decided to buy the ULTIMATE collection for a mere $1.99.It was wonderful! I was happier than a twister in a trailer park! Whenever there was down-time at my facility, and everyone sat there exchanging bean dip recipes, while talking about dieting at the same time, i'd have my nose in my Kindle reading my favorite plays, exploring new ones as well as sonnets, etc.Fast forward 2016, it had been a few months since i read from my Ultimate collection. I went to the table of contents. And.. there wasn't any. I highlighted "Front Matter" hoping i would find it there? Nope. All that appeared was the beginning of the first comedy, "All's Well that end's well"..okay..I highlighted "Cover" where i could see the cover of the book and swipe right over to the table of contents. Guess what? There i was AGAIN - All's Well that ends well."Like other people have posted in the the one star reviews: It's like reading a data file. You have to go through every single play in order to find what you're looking for.I did the Kindle "video MayDay" asking if this was a problem, and could she help me resolve this issue? She pretended to look for the problem and disconnected us.I thought, okay.. Let's try this again. Guess what? The second "customer service" rep listened, then pretended to "look it up on amazon" herself.. right in the middle of it? She disconnected us.Apparently, this is a problem no one can solve. I tried deleting the book from the carousel, no problem. But you CANNOT delete it from the Cloud and start over. I've tried it. You cannot even remove this worthless file from the Cloud itself. It's stuck there.Thus, i'll have to find a new Shakespeare collection, with an ACTIVE table of contents.Do not waste your money of this.. I have no idea what happened? But Everlasting Flames Publishing Company better get off their Everlasting As** and fix this problem before they lose customers to other companies.Oh, just when i thought i would download other Kindle Editions of Shakespeare from other publishers? Guess What? Many of the Kindle users are having the same problem.Also, if you see a 5 star review regarding the Ultimate Collection? Check very closely. These reviews are mixed in with those who have bought the "HARD COVER EDITION" which seem to be the ones getting the 5 stars.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION! The Kindle edition does not even have a Table of Contents. You want to read Romeo and Juliet - good luck in even finding it. The hard-copy version might be OK - I don't have a copy to check. But this kindle edition is a mess. If you want to read Shakespeare on Kindle, get "William Shakespeare: The Complete Works" based on the 1974 Riverside Edition published by Eireann Press. That is the one I bought after ordering this one and finding how awful it is.

Full of insights. The Gaelic section is completely re-organized and is much easier to use as a reference. The chapter on the craft of writing alone is worth the price of admission. Those of us who have secretly turned in first drafts our entire lives are exonerated! I truly appreciate Diana Gabaldon's willingness to share her creative process. It gives hope to us all. And then, of course, there is her sense of humor.....

These Companion volumes are real works of art. They ans. most if not all questions any thoughtful reader of the 8 volumes in the current Outlander series may bring up, and more! They give not only synopsis of each book covered but discuss why certain characters act as they do; they list and identify all the characters, real and created and their place in the stories. They even elaborate on the Celtic languages and give interpretations of meanings into English along with pronunciation guides! I have yet to find a question I developed, having read all 8 books twice, whose ans. was not within these 2 wonderful compendiums. There is history, language, the writers reasoning for using language, sexuality, and motives for character actions. As well as recipes, list of medicinal plants, resources for reader to go further in all areas-lists of the authors resources........you could hardly ask for more of an author.....she even ans. questions brought up on her many promotional tours, with humor, thoughtfulness and reason.In my humble opinion, and I have read every book (including the Lord John Grey series), this is some of the finest mixture of fiction and history ever to have become available to the reading public..........and there is also a TV series (on Starz) and yes, another eagerly anticipated volume in the works!

Barton, J. (2001). Joel and Obadiah: A Comentary. Louisville, KY: Westminster John Know Press.John Barton offers many insights into the text of Joel in this commentary. I will rehash some of his thoughts here and offer some of my own comments.Barton suggests it as "reasonable" that the first half of Joel was dealing with a contemporary situation, whereas the second half is eschatological (p.27). Interestingly, though, Barton doesn't believe that the events discussed in the second half were imminent for the author. "...there is no particular reason to think the author of the second half also believed in the imminence of his expectation" (p. 29). Barton is contrasting the imminence of the first half versus what is considered to be a "determinism" in the second half, assuring that Yahweh will in fact act on behalf of His people. I would concur with Barton that the main theme of the second half of Joel (2:28-3:21) is mainly the concrete promise that Yahweh will intervene into the affairs of Judah, blessing them, saving them, and judging their enemies. At the same time, I wouldn't say that such was imminent or necessarily distant, but it is worth noting that the apocalyptic expectations in Israel's life often varied and reached a fever pitch when Jesus was born.Barton commenting on Joel's concern in 2:28-3:21,This is quite distinct from the concern of the so-called apocalyptic type of seer, who thought that the end time would be breaking in at any moment. It is focused on the reliability of God, not on any expectation of imminent intervention....It seems to me that the second half of Joel belongs more to the world of a concern for theodicy than of bated-breath expectations of imminent divine salvation for the righteous in Israel (p. 31).Theodicy is primarily concerned with God's goodness and sovereignty. Joel is vindicating God's sovereignty and goodness by forth telling what is to come. The fact is that God is alive, powerful, and good...that He will act and be vindicated when everything is said and done. I would also say that the book of Revelation gives us much the same message, assuring persecuted Christians that God will act and vindicate Himself and His own on the last day.Barton highlights the theme of God's mercy or "hesed" in the context of Joel (p. 32). God relents from the imposed plagues in response to the lament of His people. I presuppose that such a working of repentance and lament is a work of God's grace and thus shows that God loves to show mercy more so than showing judgment. I am personally a recipient of this steadfast love and am grateful that my fortunes have changed, that God has relented from His wrath towards me and has deflected it upon His very own Son, Jesus Christ.While commenting on the impending judgment upon the nations, Barton views Joel's theology as "Israel centered". "...seeing foreigners as largely the enemies of Israel and hence of YHWH...(p.34)". T.B. Dozeman, however, suggests that Joel should be read within the corpus of the "Book of the Twelve", as noted by Barton (p. 35), and is tempered by God's compassion for Nineveh found in Jonah. It can thus be debated that Joel has some universalistic concerns, of which I am inclined to believe. The Spirit being outpoured on "all flesh" and salvation provided for all who call upon the name of the Lord both serve as themes which can certainly expand beyond Israel.Barton considers possible scenarios on how best to understand Joel. Some have suggested that Joel may be a genre of "theodicy" and not prophecy at all, and for those who view Joel as prophetic are not unanimous on what aspects of Joel are past, contemporary, or future. Barton quotes on Joel 2:18,"Then the LORD became jealous for his land"--when? When the people did as the prophet told them? Or when the prophet had delivered his message? Or even within the prophetic vision--so that the narrative account is simply another part of what the prophet is predicting? The last possibility cannot be ruled out; everything in the book, including the narrative about YHWH's having pity on the people, could be taking place within the prophetic vision and might not refer to events that actually occurred in the external world (p. 87).When dealing with the transition that occurs in Joel, starting with 2:28, Barton suggests that it is an addition to an already completed work, "...I believe it is safe to conclude here that the oracle is an addition to an already completed work" (p. 94). While I may disagree with his assessment, I am agreed on his intent to determine what to make of the text in its original context. Barton suggests two possible effects of the outpoured Spirit, "First, it may be seen as the means by which dead flesh is transformed into living beings....But the second effect...is to communicate the power of YHWH...empowering them to do great deeds" (p. 95).Regarding the text "all flesh", it has been suggested by commentators that it is restricted to Israel alone, while others have pointed out that nowhere else in scripture does "all flesh" refer restrictively to Israel, but rather inclusive of all humans. Barton draws attention to Rabbinic eschatology, in that the "signs of the end" would be marked by a "gathering in of the Gentiles" (p. 96). The usage of this text by the Apostle Peter on Pentecost certainly validates the idea that an existing tradition viewed God's actions in the "last days" as having global significance.Barton's comments on the "portents" in 2:30 and judgment on the nations in 3:1-3 suggest that such needn't be understood chronologically, It does not seem probable that the "portents" here are meant to follow the outpouring of the spirit in 2:28-29--nor to precede them, for that matter. We simply have another fragmentary prophecy of the end time, which cannot be arranged with others into a chronological sequence (p. 97).On the judgment of the nations, he adds, Once again, it makes little sense to ask how this act of judgment fits in with the outpouring of the spirit or the portents of 2:30-32; it is simply another eschatological theme only loosely connected to anything else (p. 99).Perhaps, I am excercising what I think to be common sense, but it seems obvious that the Spirit's outpouring, signs, and eventual judgment upon all the nations do have chronological significance and are far more than "loosely connected". Joel 2:32 promises escape for all who call upon the name of YHWH, and I believe that this promised safety is from the coming universal judgment upon all the nations. These themes connect in a very crucial way.I appreciate Barton's contribution in this volume, but feels that he raises more questions than he answers. Where Barton does answer questions, I am inclined to disagree with his conclusions more often I have with other commentators. His vast knowledge of existing scholarship is not to be questioned for he cites much that shows a broad awareness of the existing scholarship on which he speaks.

This is a very helpful addition to my library, and it's feeding me as I write sermons based on Obadiah.

This is the last book in a series of five and after reading them all, it's the first I've reviewed. Maybe my reasoning is weird but I knew after the first, I would read them all and I wanted to save my words more as a postscript rather than a review. It has been one adventure after another traipsing after Cliff Janeway, radical cop, bookseller, book cop. Keeping him away from being gunshot was a failed endeavor. Even his girlfriends had great difficulty. But he has a way with words, charm and a charmed life. I insist on that last item because I swear as part of his invisible entourage I swear I saw an angel sitting on his shoulder! If you desire a fabulous ride into a bookman's life from that first "find" to learning how that book was printed, bound, sent out gently by stork sold read, cherished and finally passed on, read this series. Oh and you just might learn a great deal about some great authors and literature. What a haul!

Cliff Janeway, reitred Denver cop turned booksller, is once again called upon to put his detective skills to the test to figure out who stole some very rare books. He is brought in to determine how many books in a vast collection had been stolen, offer an appraisal, and perhaps identify who stole them. Then he is drug further into the family history to determine if there was a murder many years ago, or if Candice Geiger's death was the accident it was ruled to be. To question the family and get to know what happened so many years ago, Janeway must delve into the family business, horse racing.This is the last book in the Janeway novels. I found I liked it the least of the series. While I really enjoy the book collector's aspect of the novel, I did not enjoy the horse racing aspect. Dunning speaks of it in the same way he speaks of book collecting. As a reader, you can tell that he's passionate about both and as such, he is rather descriptive of both worlds. Since I don't enjoy horse racing, I found that half of the book a bit tedious and I longed for him to get back to describing the book business and the rare collections. However, if you enjoy both the book world and the horse racing world, then you should enjoy this book more than I did.

I am a fan of John Dunning ... read all the Cliff Janeway's and one of his other novels. In Cliff Janeway, Dunning has created a memorable character. It has probably been nearly 10 years since I last read Dunning, but I found myself immediately involved. The setting of this story (horse-racing world) was a change for Cliff, but quite well explained. And of course the book world was still involved. I always learn something interesting about the used book world when I read about Cliff Janeway and this occurred in this book as well.

Plot s bit weak and contrived. Characters could be better drawn. Protagonist motivation seems a bit weird. Interesting insight into the lives of those who work in horse racing.

In this novel we learn about the world behind horse racing as well as the normal book industry information. The author knows what he is talking about and does a good job of describing both worlds.However, the final twist in the plot really turned me off! Mystery novels with a twist are great, but the twist in the plot has to be at least somewhat believable - in this case it is not.If you are into the Bookman series, then you have to read this to stay up with the overall Janeway story line, but other than that, save your money.

As a fan of this series I always look forward to the next book. This latest did not disappoint. The change of location was interesting, and there was a great sense of place. What I like most about this series, though, is the characters, and not just the main character. John Dunning creates characters in his books that you will long remember; if you read "The Bookman's Promise," you'll know what I mean. The character "Rick" from this book, and even "Candice," who is present only in memory, will remain with you. Even the personality of the horse comes through. A great addition to the series.

Mr. Dunning makes me feel as if he is an old friend. All his characters are well thought out and seem very real to me. I would rank his work among the very best in the mystery/thriller genre.

I have enjoyed all of the Janeway novels a great deal. However, this was a bit disappointing. Told me more about horse racing than I wanted to know and told me less about book collecting than I wanted and that I have become used to in the Bookman series. And I feel that Dunning committed what was once considered a "sin" in the mystery writing genre in that we were never really introduced to the character that did the dirty deed until very late in the novel...three fourths of the way through or even later. The reader had very little reason to include this suspect on the suspect list. I found it to be a deux ex machina production. I will however, purchase the next Bookman novel....should there happen to be one.

Purchased this fella as a replacement for my son’s “Baby Bigfoot”. Original Baby Bigfoot was purchased on a family trip in the Redwoods in CA several years ago in the funky little gift shop at Confusion Hill. Irreplaceable.Fast forward to a hotel stay where Baby can’t be found. Tears are shed. Panic ensues and Mom vows to make it right. Thankful for 2 day Prime, another identical Bigfoot is magically on its way. But a miracle happens! We return home to find Baby tucked safely in his bed, having never left the house to begin with! Two days later, the replacement arrives and gets carefully stashed away....

If you are a Squatch fan, this little guy can make your day. Tiny and just the right size to stick in a stocking or care package. Can easily hang in a locker or sit among your other bigfoot toys. The personalized book is fun for kids who like the adopt-a-toy format.

Ansible is not a very complex package to use, but there isn't a good online tutorial with enough details. That's why there are actually quite a few books on Ansible out there. Some are outdated, some have good reviews but don't progress logically. This little book by Michael Heap turns out to be the best intro to Ansible at this time. The main reason is, as another reviewer pointed out, the book progresses logically.A caveat: I have read/watched some tutorials on Ansible before, so I was able to push through the few typos/outdated commands in the book. If this is your first try, don't be discouraged. One of the reviewer said he was able to get help from the author by contacting him. But if you are an experienced programmer, you probably can figure things out yourself, because Ansible's error messages will likely point you to the right direction.I don't review products I bought very often, but I found it unfair to this little gem that it has such a low average score here. So here are my five stars.

People don't realize it but books aren't always presented after publication, the way the author intended. In this case, yes there are some confusing components encountered in Chapter 3, BUT I reached out to the author himself for help and he worked with me until it was fixed. It all amounted to a few bad line breaks, that were simply a product of publication. Not the author's fault and certainly no big deal! How ole' two star buddy below figured he could review a book after getting stuck on the third chapter is a mystery to me. My experience with the book has been great and my experience with the author, even better. Buy this book!

The book is basically a giant human-readable script asking you to copy-paste a bunch of crypto text into various files. It has a few errors in it and not much is explained or detailed. But still, it does better than what has become the norm for technical books these days and if you are a googler and used to reading public docs, then I think you will get by. One reading this book to get a first "hands-on experience" with Ansible will probably find it useful.However, I failed to proceed beyond chapter 3. Chapter 3, again, ask you to copy-paste a huge NGINX configuration file. This can not be copy-pasted as is of course because the author expends no energy properly tackling weird line breaks. You will have to figure that out yourself, many times throughout the book. But, no matter how much I fiddled around with the configuration file, I couldn't get NGINX to accept it. He whined about "invalid number of arguments in 'location' directive". Since it appears that the rest of the chapters in this book build on the work you do in chapter 3, you're pretty much screwed. So pay for the book only if you find that a completely dumbed-down introduction to Ansible over the course of three chapters is worth it.

It well structured as it starts with simple concepts while creating a set of playbooks that evolve with each chapter.The real world example, in this case, Wordpress, made it easier to understand what we were aiming to achieve.I've got the 2016 kindle version.

Chaotic. If you dont have a previous Ansible background it will be useless.Chapter on Variables is OK.There is not really a good Ansible book on the market yet.
