The Barefoot Gen series documents the life of young Gen Nakaoka of Hiroshima starting when he is six years old in the summer of 1945 when the USA dropped an atomic bomb on the city. Volume 9 takes place at the end of 1950 and through 1951. Gen is now 12 years old, and as the book opens the city has condemned the small hut that his family had called home. The rest of his family has either died from the blast or radiation sickness, or moved out. Now homeless, Gen decides to move in with the group of orphans he has befriended who have their own hut. While he is happy to be near the girl Natsue that he is fond of, her radiation sickness is now in its final stages and she is dying. After Natsue dies he is heartbroken but the spirit to live on through any adversity that his father instilled in him keeps him from despair.The same spirit that has helped him and all who come in contact with him as they struggle out of the hellish remains of the atomic destruction of their city and their lives, now helps an artist in despair. The artist returns the favor by teaching Gen how to draw. The artist tells Gen "Art Has No Borders" which inspires him to learn the universal language of art so that he can break down the national barriers that led to the war and the destruction of his beloved city. As the book ends he dreams of a peaceful world free of war where all the countries are connected by rainbow bridges that people can cross freely and be friends.

As riding they TAT is on my bucket list and something that I'm itching to do in the next year or so (and something I'll want to do again with my son when he graduates in 2020),I'm reading every book and online from I can find,which is how I came across this book--as I was buying Lois On The Loose,Amazon had this gem listed in the "shoppers who bought that also bought this" list,lol,and I'm glad that it did ☺I enjoyed the writing style,the pictures,the bits of humor,and the tips at the end (I wish to note specifically as a new-to-me Kawasaki Super Sherpa\KL250 owner,when the author mentions it specifically when expressing his thoughts on smaller bikes answered that very question ("I wonder if my SS would be a good steed for....?") for me as f he knew I was reading g,lol 👍Anyways,I enjoyed the read,and for the low price,its definitely worth adding to your kindle books collection ☺

Nate Berkopec gives the reader a no-nonsense, fast paced account of two rides a cross the U.S. mostly on gravel roads. There is no drama, no romance, no grand idea presented in the telling. This reader appreciated Berkopec's simple style, but wished he had invoked the writer's mantra: show, don't tell. A good travelogue merely tells about the trip, a great one would have brought the reader along with a sense of what the trip was like from inside the helmet. He rarely identifies place, and virtually never shows the reader what the landscape looks like other than whether the road was straight or twisted. These must have been two fantastic rides first traveling west, then east across this great land.

I loved the book from the get go.He was right to the point ,with out over talking trying to make the book longer. I also liked the fact he did not play up being a professional rider he was very humble. I could picture me and my bmw f650 Gs out there doing the same trial. Thanks for the book please do another ride and write about it .I would buy another of your books and thanks for the supply list.

Great travel story. The author in a very matter of fact fashion related his first big motorcycle trip on the TransAmericaTrail from Tennessee to Oregon and the next year from Oregon to Minnesota. Nice, low key writing. Good read for any motorcycle traveller, fan of travel writing or adventure junky.

Well written and quite descriptive description of riding be yourself and why. Some great advice to all who might follow. Thanks for the opportunity to escape and dream about being on the road!

I have literally hundreds of books on Japanese design, culture, history and philosophy. This book stands out. It's gorgeously illustrated with clear, vivid, photos, and not just the run-of-the-mill usuals - the author has drawn on what are clearly personal connections with scholars, collectors and museums to illustrate this book with a fascinating collection of photos. The book provides an amazing degree of detail without getting bogged down or lost on tangents; quite a feat for a book covering such a broad topic with a lengthy history. Although I've lived in Japan, speak and read Japanese and have been traveling there for over forty years, I still learned all sorts of things from this book! I wish this book had existed when I first started studying Japan - I would recommend this to anyone interested in Japan, from casual observers to serious scholars. A real accomplishment, and a big contribution to the field.

"Japanese Design: Art, Aesthetics, & Culture," is the book I would recommend for anyone seeking an initial one-volume guide to the underlying principles of Japanese art and design. Broad-based in its conception and beautiful in its treatment, Patricia Graham's 2014 publication is not the sole volume an expert will want to rely on. Still, I know of no more appropriate place to start one's exploration of Japan's aesthetic traditions and/or help define an introductory high school or college course on the subject. It is worth noting that Graham's book is not a symbols dictionary, so this is not the place to research the usage and meaning of the moon, sun, lion, or plum blossom, for example. Nor is this the singular book you will want to pick up for the novice enthusiast of "anime" movies or modern Japanese comics. Instead, we have here well-structured examinations of traditional and abstract issues, such as the aesthetics and cultural parameters of Japanese design, as well as historical issues with an emphasis on the introduction of Japanese design to the West between the 1830s and 1950s.

Great images and very useful introductory text to Japanese design (all new to me). Especially good for navigating the commonplace historical factual inaccuracies about Japanese design that have arisen over time. Also excellent as a guide for further reading on the subject with great summaries of the contributions of key writers on the subject in the 19th and first half of 20th centuries as well as numerous contemporary refs.

I wasn't interested in this book for the fashion but for the photography side. Vogue photographers are some of the best in the world, so I picked it up from the library with that reference in mind. I found that I couldn't get enough of the book in two weeks, so I had to buy it, and I'm glad I did. I love the photos. They're very inspiring photographically. But I also found myself fascinated by the profiles of the fashion editors (which is what the book is about). Even as a male not involved in the fashion industry in any way, I found reading their stories, about their personalities, and the perspectives from where they fashioned their photoshoots from completely interesting.Whether you're a fashionista or a photographer with an interest in fashion photography or even just in inspiration to give your clients a little extra edge in their shoots, you need to pick up this book. It's definitely worth the investment.

When I first saw this book I was a little scared because it didn't have a look inside feautre (as other books do) but I went ahead with my instinct and bought it. This book is packed with a lot of examples of using controls, and lists the hierarchy of the MFC.But I was unable to open the project examples from the CD with VC++ 6 standard. It does cover a majority classes, however it lacks content dealing with code, so you will have to know C++ very well to use this text.The entire book is in eformat on the CD which is good, and some of the files could be used which makes the book good for all round reference.

This book is a great introduction to MFC and ATL. I think it help programmers to understand MFC but it also makes you confused. E.g. in the first chapter Views and Docs are explained but in next chapters the Docs are Views aren't used as they were explained and somtimes they aren't even used at all. Simple functions such as scroll bars aren't explained but Controls (Progress Bars etc.) are much easier to use and they are explained in detail. The book is also loaded with ERRORs. The ATL and COM chapters are explained in details and the books gets its 2 stars for that.

The "user level" on this book centers on "accomplished". Nothing could be farther from the truth. The book covers 10 or so sample apps/controls that are basically nothing but "run the wizard, and add some code". No real discussion of MFC and how to use it, and the ATL examples are ridiculously simple -- not one of them has any graphic components. If you know nothing about MFC and VC++ 5.0's wizards, then maybe you might want to read this book. But maybe not.

Loaded with errors. Reads like a draft copy.
