An important read for those who struggle to understand those so-called enlightened and educated supporters of slavery. It is, at times, a read that seems so delusional and yet carefully drafted by the writer to support and institution that has and never will have any redeeming elements. It also carries a message of why racism thrives into the America of today.

Excellent compilation of intellectual ideas from the antebellum south.As the author makes clear, however repugnant the ideals/beliefs ofracism are, it is important to examine them openly. This book allowsjust that among leading intellectuals at the time.

The seven essays collected in this book, written by Southerners between 1830 and 1860, are unpalatable pompous nonsense for any modern reader except perhaps a "stars-and-bars" Red State neo-confederate. All seven are self-righteous apologies for slavery, on the basis of the authors' interpretation of the Bible showing that the Negro is accursed and that slavery is God's Will. All seven make similar sociological arguments than slavery is a beneficent institution and a necessary component of a well-ordered society, in which some must always serve as the "mudsill." All seven accuse "fanatics," who ought to be tending to their own class of "wage-slaves," of campaigning to disrupt the idyllic social structure of the South, the new Athens. The authors in question are Thomas Roderick Dew, William Harper, Thornton Stringfellow, James Henry Hammond, Josiah Nott, Henry Hughes, and George Fitzhugh.Historians as a profession sometimes need to comb through some awful trash to glean insights into the course of human events. Southern historian Drew Gilpin Faust (now serving time as President of Harvard University) has assembled and edited these essays, not only to hold them as exhibits of the intransigence with which the antebellum South defended its "peculiar institution," but also because she finds evidence in them of a larger cultural paradigm, of a world-view that depended on hierarchy and class consciousness for meaning, of a set of values based on white supremacy that didn't end with defeat in the rebellion of 1861-1865. She explains her hypothesis in a twenty-page introduction to the anthology.She writes:"In recent years... interpretations of proslavery thought have shifted. Perhaps more accustomed to the notion of a timeless and geographically extensive American racism, scholars have begun to place proslavery within a wider context, to regard it as more than simply a distasteful manifestation of collective paranoia gripping the South in the years before the Civil War. Historians have come to view the proslavery argument less as evidence of moral failure and more a a key to wider patterns of beliefs and values. The defense of human bondage...was perhaps more important as an effort to construct a coherent southern social philosophy than as a political weapon..."The persistence of modern racism is but one forceful reminder of the ways human beings always view the world in terms of inherited systems of belief and explanation that only partially reflect the reality..."Dispassionate language! Historians are rewarded for such. The dire corollary of Dr. Faust's hypothesis is that at least some segments of the American populace needed and still need "white superiority" to maintain the whole structure of their beliefs and values. If so, woe unto us!

Excellent stamp catalog for the serious stamp collector. Beautifully printed with all color images of the stamps except a very few of the oldest stamps from some countries. (It's the only game in town, so it better be good). Everything in life just gets more expensive all the time and the Scott Catalogs are no exception. I have Scott Advantage, but could not get it throught Scott because I waited too long and they were out of stock in Vol. 3. Amazon's price is no bargain, so Scott Advantage is the way to go. I rated this a 4 because of the price.

This book arrived in very good condition. I would say that James E. Kloetzel is very reliable. The book will be very useful.

As this catalogue is and has been for some years now printed in colour, It's really the "Go-To" catalogue in the USA for all of the world's stamps. The Machin Section at the back of Great Britain is an invaluable aid to Machin collectors, it's superior work is well-noted.

This is a good guide, I suppose, but it was flat. There were no recommendations and no special details that would allow you to choose one hotel, one place to visit, or one tourist attraction over another. Having never been to Venezuela before, we really felt lost with the plain data, and decided to order a different guide in hopes that it would be a little more personal, or enthusiastic about something.

Everything you need to know , in this environment the old fashioned book was perfect albeit a bit wet by the end of the trip.

Venezuela is a long-overlooked paradise for backpackers, adventure travellers and special interest visitors like hikers, climbers, rafters and birders. The same size as neighbouring Colombia, but with half the population, Venezuela's natural environment is in good shape. The north of the country harbours 90% of the population, leaving the huge southern states of Amazonas and Bolivar with one of the lowest population densities in America. Indeed, without roads or railways, this area forms part of the world's largest tropical wilderness. Add to that the largest area under protection of any country in the Western Hemisphere, 43 national parks (two of them over 30,000 sq. km) and one of the top ten largest protected areas in the world (the 84,000 sq. km Alto Orinoco-Casiquiare Biosphere Reserve) and you can see why Venezuela is an exciting place to visit.It is fifteen years since the first edition of the "No Frills Guide to Venezuela", written by Hilary Branch and published by Hilary Bradt. Since then, this book has been at the forefront of travel guides to Venezuela. The key to its success is simple: the author lives in Venezuela and regularly travels to the places she describes. The book is therefore much more accurate - and more exciting! - than say the rival Lonely Planet or the Footprint Guide. This 2003 edition stretches to 538 pages, yet it is still compact enough to be portable. The text is succinct and readable. Hilary distils her experience into the every section of the book from an expanded treatment of Caracas to detailed information on hiking in Roraima and travelling up the River Caura. There are plenty of maps to help the visitor too. A strong conservation focus is welcome, with information about wildlife and habitats, environmental issues, conservation projects and NGOs. Definitely the book the discerning visitor should acquire for a successful trip to Venezuela.

Hilary Dunsterville Branch's guide to Venezuela is the best guide out there in the market. I've just got back from a month backpacking around the country and I wish I'd bought it before I left the States. As it was I was lucky enough to bump into a French couple that gave me their copy in Merida in the Venezuelan Andes. After three days traveling with Branch's book I dumped my Lonely Planet Guide in the trash. Not only does she give you the practical details on off the beaten track beaches like Choroni, Santa Fe and Morrocoy but she gives you the run down on the cheapest places backpackers can stay. The history was good and easy to read. She got me up to the top of Mount Roraima and her section on the Rio Caura is excellent. What can I say. Thanks to this guide I now know that a month isn't long enough to spend in this incredible tropical country. I'm going back again next year and I'll be taking Branch with me.

I usually travel with Lonely Planet. This was the first time that I bought another book for my travel. But after reading the reviews on this site I decided to try. I have to admit that I was very sceptical, but.... the purchase was worth the money. I am very happy that I did't bought LP... I had the opportunity to compare the two books in Venezuela and I can say that this is deffinitly a better gude to Venezuela. For example LP doesn't even mention the port La Guaira. I usually travel with Lonely Planet. This was the first time that I bought another book for my travel. But after reading the reviews on this site I decided to try. I have to admit that I was very sceptical, but.... the purchase was worth the money. I am very happy that I did't bought LP... I had the opportunity to compare the two books in Venezuela and I can say that this is deffinitly a better guide to Venezuela than Lonely Planet. For example LP doesn't even mention the port La Guaira. Which is near the international airport.I suggest to buy it.

My wife and I have retired in Venezuela for two years. The Insight Guide has beautiful pictures and is great to read, like a paperback coffee table book. The Footprint guide is fair, but not always well organized. So when we really want information about something specific, we go to our Bradt guide.

The guide contains a lot of details on where to go and how to find things. Opening hours are not always as given in the guide. You might find places open at other times and closed at the times indicated.Not many pictures but very good information on sites i.e. historical background, ...

Expect the unexpected.This book is one to be savored, as the author takes the reader into a freefall of unexpected passion between two unlikely protagonists. Set against the social mores of a bygone time, the book engages the reader in a strange, almost hypnotic way with its authenticity of time and place. When the unthinkable happens, the author weaves a tapestry of heart pounding suspense around a well-spring of passion. It is an absolute page-turner.

It is 1922 and in an older house, the widow Mrs. Wray and her daughter Frances try to keep things together, keep the house up, and continue to pay the bills left by the late Mr. Wray on his death. They no longer have servants, but Frances does all the work around the house, still they are falling further and further behind.To bring in a little money, they decide to take in paying lodgers. Enter the Barbers, Leonard and his wife Lillian. They turn the Wray house upside down, first just by just the chaos of their being there and then, as the story progresses (Waters writes a great narrative), the story goes from a period drama to love story, to crime drama that will have you turning pages as quickly as you can to get to the end. It's the sort of book where you wish you could re-visit the characters 6 months after the story ends.I was up until 2 a.m. finishing this, something I can say about very few books!

so the story goes, when Dusty Springfield ran into Carole King at the Brill Building in NYC during the early 1960s, she remarked at how much music came out of such a little bit of a thing. you could be equally impressed with the transformative story-telling of Sarah Waters.that said, The Paying Guests is a very generous story. as usual, Sarah Waters was able to create a time in history that was accurate to the point, for me anyway, of actually being in this post WW-I town outside of London. it was very sexy and had all the madness of a new romance that can drive many to do things that should not be done.that said, this would be another one of Sarah Waters’ perfect stories with one exception. the criminal and legal issues were circular and even a bit tedious. because this took over about one third of the book, and at the end, the result was that the excitement and thrall didn’t linger the way i would have liked.but still it was really great.

I highly recommend this book. It will have you on the edge of your seat, and at the same time it will make you think.In 1922 London, a mother and adult daughter take in boarders to make ends meet. The boarders are a young married couple, as flamboyant as the landlords are drab. The daughter and wife begin an affair, fall in love, commit a murder, and cover it up. The story is narrated by the daughter.The bulk of the book focuses on the psychological nuances of love, infidelity, and especially guilt. Other readers have complained about the length of the book and feel that it gets bogged down in the third and final part. I believe that it is purposely detailed and slow moving in an effort to illustrate the main character's anguish and uncertainty. To me, the central questions in the book are how far will you go for love and once you go there, can love survive?In addition to the main story, the author also does a good job exploring post WWI England. Families have lost sons and husbands, returning soldiers are unemployed and ignored by their country, women's roles are changing, and homosexuality is misunderstood and unacceptable. Some interesting parallels to the present day.

“The Paying Guests” is a novel that was the choice for my book club, or I am not sure I would have ever picked it up. My reaction to it is an odd one. The novel held my attention, but for the first 200 or so pages I could not tell you why, as I did not find it particularly interesting. Once the main “event” of the book happens the story barrels along to its conclusion, but overall the text is overwritten and massively redundant.The author’s characterization of Frances (the protagonist) is probably the most successful thing about the book, and Sarah Waters does a decent job of creating a sense of time and place. Although 1922 London does not leap off the pages of this text, it is clearly established.“The Paying Guests” held my attention for stretches at a time, I guess that’s a good thing. However, I suspect that this was partly due to the fact that I wanted to move on and read something else.Would I pick up another novel of Ms. Waters’…I seriously doubt it.
