I am an avid reader and mostly read mysteries...every once in a while I try a new author and that is how I came to read this book.I was intrigued from the beginning. The relationship between the husband and wife was unique and interesting. Their thoughts on their 5 boys were not very deep but curious. The unfolding of the fathers "other family" after his death was clever and going back to his youth to explain it was helpful to understanding him.My problem was the ending of the book. It was abrupt, unexpected and unsatisfying to the point that I went on Amazon to see the number of pages to make sure that was the ending and that I had not missed something.......I am almost sorry that I read the book at all.
Susan Rieger’s THE HEIRS is everything you want in a fictional story about a large, well to do family who, when their father passes away, the secrets come out. Not only their dearly departed father’s but their mother’s, and each of the five brother’s, who have been keeping their own secrets hushed from each other.This is a family who is admired amongst each other and from afar. A married couple who set a high bar. Trying to make theirs a happy one for their children. Different from their own upbringings.The intricately woven novel shows what happens when there is layer upon layer and the players don’t always reveal all that is going on or has gone on. History gets rewritten or perhaps, assumed, and often times, you may never get to the truth.The Falkes family is intriguing, the characters beguiling, and the book full of twists that will keep you entertained.
This book is a treasure! I will want to read it again. The characters are all so interesting and well drawn and the situations and setting fascinating. I read a lot of fiction and am often disappointed, but this is a winner!.
The first chapter was hard to get through as the author seemed compelled to describe her heroine in great detail before getting into the plot. It was a tedious read.As more of the characters were introduced, my interest in the story line grew but some of the relationships never seemed genuine. There are 5 boys in the Faulkes family but I'm not really sure what purpose one of them served in the story. He is completely insignificant. It is hard to keep them straight as the story jumps around. Their reactions to their father's infidelity and the possibility of half-siblings is unreal. Eleanor is a puzzle...not enough of her is revealed to make me care too terribly much about her. As the story comes to a close, the author jumps quickly from one scene to another without them connecting in a meaningful way. This story had potential but I had little sympathy for the Faulkes family. Maybe I'm not rich enough to identify with them.

The Falkes brothers are pitched into turmoil, at once missing their father and feeling betrayed by him. In disconcerting contrast, their mother, Eleanor, is cool and calm, showing preternatural composure. Eleanor and Rupert had made an admirable life together — Eleanor with her sly wit and generosity, Rupert with his ambition and English charm — and they were proud of their handsome, talented sons: Harry, a brash law professor; Will, a savvy Hollywood agent; Sam, an astute doctor and scientific researcher; Jack, a jazz trumpet prodigy; Tom, a public-spirited federal prosecutor. The brothers see their identity and success as inextricably tied to family loyalty – a loyalty they always believed their father shared. Struggling to reclaim their identity, the brothers find Eleanor’s sympathy toward the woman and her sons confounding. Widowhood has let her cast off the rigid propriety of her stifling upbringing, and the brothers begin to question whether they knew either of their parents at all.My Thoughts: In a non-linear style, the reader learns more about the Falkes family and some of their friends. Dipping into the past, moving forward, and then centering on the issues of the present, The Heirs: A Novel feels like an in-depth portrait of a family and an era. The back and forth offers an opportunity to learn more about the characters and how they came to be…but at times, the writing style felt like a detached listing of events. Abrupt, dry, and matter-of-fact in its portrayals.Set in Manhattan, primarily, at the beginning of the 21st Century, we come to learn about the lives of a family, punctuated by the dramatic events. As with most families, there are conflicts…and I thought it was interesting how we slowly learn traits of the grown Falkes sons, as they each face the current dilemma: Harry is a “blurter,†coming out with whatever he is thinking, with no filter. Will tries to be the amiable one, and Sam, the middle child, seems to be neutral about most issues…until suddenly, he seems to rebel. Jack is described as the obnoxious one…and Tom, the baby, has often required looking after by the others.How they each react to the potential interlopers, the two other putative sons from a different mother, tells us a lot about their characters.We also learn more about the dynamics of the family members as we see glimpses of the past. I liked learning more about Rupert, about how he met Eleanor, but we also catch a glimpse of his relationship with Vera, the woman who sues the estate. Was he the father of her two sons? Or was there more to the story? A few more surprises pop up along the way, with an ending that left some more questions in a satisfying way. 4 stars.
