The cookbook format is a great way to organize and present the subject. Ms Pate's book strikes a nice balance between style and substance. The photography provides lots of visual appeal while she explains terms and techniques.Who knew that fennel stalks and feathers would produce such a beautiful green hue? I'll never look at the supermarket's produce department quite the same way. This will be a real go-to book for anyone interested in natural dyeing.

A recent grad from SAIC, I was looking for a reference to support my desire for a more immersive art practice. As a fiber artist I found this book to be approachable to those with no experience and challenging to those with a masters degree - a very difficult achievement. This book is an incredible treasure and I am not only inspired to create more art, I am now able to face my hesitation/fear of natural dyes, further questioning, why isn’t everyone taking their art practice to this level of sustainablity?

Love this book!! Beautiful photography and a comprehensive guide to dyeing with easy to follow instructions and a list of resources. Perfect for the home or textile artist library.

Not alot of substance, very basic. There are better books on the subject that offer more information on natural fabric dyeing. I hate to be negative but want to be helpful to those searching for better resources.

What a fabulous book! I especially like that there are projects as well as the recipes for the dyes. The blues and purples are especially lovely.

This book is intended for the children who are a little older. It requires the ability to use some things which are every day items around the house and in addition a few specialty items. The author is Maggie Pate and she is a fashion designer who is recognized for her innovative methods in fashion.A great gift item for the creative child who I would guess should be about 10 years or older. In the book there is not a indication of age but that is what I would peg it at. I would recommend this book for those who have some notions of aromatherapy and would like to learn more.I am a massage therapist and I did a training in aromatherapy for massage only and then got interested in aromatology.This book clearly shows that this author is experienced and she knows what she is talking about. I learned more about aromatology(clinical aromatherapy) thanks to this book. Read it twice and I use it as a reference on a regular basis. Would like have more recipes maybe for the internal mode of application, but still a good book.There are also some clinical examples. Real author, happy I found one, as aromatherapy secton is spammed by low-quality material. I am happy this book is written by a professional author and aromatologist. Good job Maureen, I will be recommending your book!

Except for listing some oils, and one to two words categorizing the use, and not much else, that's what you get. You definitely get what you pay for. Could have easily gotten the info off an internet search, or you tube. Don't waste your money.

I have used essential oils to make soap and scents, but this info was more healing related. I gained knowledge I didn't have about essential oils and how to use them for common ailments. They work, and they don't create new problems when used properly.

I would have liked more recipes to make for any symptoms. Also more variety of essential oils in the book. The dilution part of the book was good. It needed more information on how to use each oil for whatever symptom., and where to apply each one, and how to apply it for each symptom.

This is a good book for the beginner. A suggestion for the basic oils are given and some uses. It has good safety tips and other information lacking on some of the other essential oil books.

I did not read this yet ... but Essential oils are my life!!

I have been slowly making my own products. This booklet has been very informative allowing me to understand the natural formulas. A nice easy to understand book on to topic.

Very helpful. Showed me how to mix my oils best!

While the author of this work sadly passed away a few years ago, the book is not in the least outdated and is as clear and as comprehensive as one could possibly wish. There are large color photos on virtually every page. If you have the least bit of interest in DIY framing (or even professional framing, though no claim for that is made by the author), then this book is for you.

Quite a comprehensive introduction to framing that goes on to cover more complex and challenging aspects of framing paintings on fabric to 3D objects. Equipment required for creating mat cutouts for you pictures is well covered and explained pretty well. I don't know if you could call this the definitive framing publication, but it's a pretty good starter for beginners, such as myself, and should enthuse you to delve deeper into the creation of your own frames. I think that the chapter on frame styles for various artworks is important, though perhaps a bit light, as it's an important consideration when you're trying to determine the look of your artwork as some frames just don't look right for certain images. Overall it's a very good and quite readable book and I'd thoroughly recommend it. Given a bit more technical detail I'd have given this 5 stars and my rating of 4 stars should be read as 4+.

this is a good introductory book into picture framing. It's not fancy or hyper technical, but it gives a very good overview and a good source listing for supplies and how to use them. I would not recommend it as a reference to an expert framer, but from novice to intermediately experienced framers, this is a good intro and reference.

I joined a local art gallery recently and found that if I sent my photos to be framed I might as well just give the products away. A friend gave me a brief framing tutorial in her home and I walked away with still more questions. Then I found this book on Amazon. This is a COMPLETE guide for matting and framing artwork for presentation. I would call it a "must have" for anyone who can't afford to have their work sent out for framing and has questions about "how to"!

No information on how to make frames for art on stretched canvas. The contents page is very misleading. While it refers to framing canvas art, it only shows how to stretch canvas on canvas stretchers....not framing stretched canvas art. I found it to be a totally useless book and a frustrating waist of money. So, if you need information on how to frame stretched canvas art, this is not the book to buy.

Good, easy to read and use guide on framing. Runs the entire gamut of framing. Decent price when I bough it.

I absolutely love this Guide. I have not tried all the projects because I am just starting to frame some of my own photos, but the book is excellent with great instructions and illustrations.

I was told about Everything a Band-Aid Can't Fix: A Teen's Guide to Healing and Dealing with Life by a friend of the author. I preordered it out of support for her and Precious Dreams. I read it and enjoyed ever page with intention to passing it on to my goddaughter who is in high school. I cant wait to share it with her and telling some others about it too. As I read it I said heck some adults need to read this especially when it some to the social media part and plenty others chapters. It was able to relate to the book in my 30s, so I'm sure others will too. There are exercises within Everything a Band-Aid Can't Fix: A Teen's Guide to Healing and Dealing with Life that can be completed in the book as well. No need to stop to go grab a journal.

As a grown up now looking back on my troubled teen years, I couldn’t help but wish I had this book to comfort and guide me. Author Nicole Russell helps us to understand the importance of “self comfort” -learning the ideas and techniques of how to get through tough times and rough transitions in life. She adds compelling and real stories from Hip Hop artists, football players, internet entrepreneurs, life coaches and an array of fascinating people who share their lessons of how they triumphed over adversity. The author has worked with thousands of teens in shelters, foster care, group homes and the prison system and inspired them to change their lives for the better. The book shines with the simple wisdom, deep insights and concrete tips she has learned working with teens in transition. . These interactions pepper the book with fascinating contributions. Written in a simple conversational style that teens will find fun to read but with layers of seriousness that adults will find compelling. I’m also going to give as a gift to teens in my family. They will enjoy reading it and using it as a work book, too. I found the book to be surprisingly helpful for me as well. Anyone looking for ways to get through rough patches in life will find much to use in this terrific read.

This book is in a category of its own and is especially useful for someone like me who works with youth. This book is aimed for teens and the many struggles they face at that delicate time where they pull away from their parents and begin forming attachments to friends and relationships outside of the home which often leads to frustration and heartbreak because their peers have their own battles to fight through. Such is life, but finding ways to address those things makes the transition into becoming ourselves less hectic. Russell uses testimonies from prominent figures and takes chapters from her own life (literally) to put into perspective that the things we’re going through are often fleeting yet necessary to shape who we are and who we will become. She reinforces that we are a result of our experiences no matter how bad are good and that we have a choice of becoming the who we want to be. From bullies to victims to fast and slow learners and to the outspoken or quiet, this book speaks to everyone regardless if we come from broken homes or tight-knit families. The practical approach of using storytelling minced with prompts encourages an interactive self-discovery to consider why we think and feel the way we do and how we might cope with the relative difficulties in our coming of age years into adulthood. Even as an adult I was forced to rethink why I acted the way I did as a kid and how that still influences my relationships). Full disclosure: I had the great fortune of meeting Nicole when she founded Precious Dreams and saw firsthand how she connected with teens who often entered her workshops somewhat jaded (activities are a common requirement for youth in transition) and watched how they lit up during her motivational talks and were excited to discover the things that comfort them and how they can use them to cope. Her work inspired me to form my own organization working with incarcerated youth—many of the things she did with teens inspired what I do with mine—including bringing guest speakers who talk about overcoming and becoming the person they wanted to be (many of those people have testimonies in the book). I additionally was able to bring her into my workshops to share this book and the teens’ feedback is proof that the approach was not only effective but eye-opening for youth who are too often inundated by the prying questions of therapists and counselors. This workbook allows them to work through issues on their own, which is a preferred choice, especially among some of the most traumatized teens. I highly recommend that if you work with youth and are in a position to bring Russell in to present the book, to please do so. Her author talk wasn’t self-promoting but was motivational and held up a mirror for my diverse classroom where students got to identify with challenges they face by simply being who they were born as in this world. I say this not only as Russell’s colleague (in the same line of work) but as someone who cares deeply about youth development and positive reinforcements. “Nothing is promised in this life (not even relationships); if we don’t learn to love, heal, and cope without being dependent on people or things, we’ll never survive.”

Nicole Russell has committed herself to her mission and purpose of empowering youth who are in unfortunate conditions due to no reasons of their own. As a result of her mission, she has written a book that address common issues in teens, but in my opinion, also in adults. The reason why I believe it is both applicable for teens and adults is because, whatever childhood issues that are neglected, often journey into one's adult life. If you are a teen, parent of a teen, or an adult who have emotional and/or mental struggles due to childhood pains, I encourage you to get a copy of this book NOW! Three things I want to say about this book. 1) It is REAL! 2) It is RELEVANT, and 3) It is RESOURCEFUL! Do your LIFE a favor and READ this NOW so someone will not have to READ you LATER. -PC

I originally bought this for my little sister who is going through mental health issues (anxiety/depression). After reading just a few chapters, I realized I’m going to need to order a second copy for her and I’m keeping this one for myself!!! There are excellent tools in this book to help you understand yourself and navigate life’s ups and downs. A MUST BUY!

I finished Santiago's Children last night and am completely amazed by what the author accomplished. It is easily one of the most memorable books I have ever read. In fact, I was shocked to see that it was his first book. Not only is this true story impressive and engaging, but the writing is so well crafted. When a non-fiction - which characteristically are inherently missing the structured plot development - can keep me totally engrossed and continually looking forward to the next chapter, then something remarkable has been achieved. Of course, that remarkable thing is that Steve made me care about the children and about young Steve. The clear fact that he feels such affection for the kids, and expressed that so richly, made me love them also. I found myself wanting to follow them through the rest of their lives and not wanting the author to leave Santiago. When he said his final good-byes, tears were streaming down my face, along with all of them. I give this outstanding book the highest possible recommendation.

This is a great book for any recent college graduate, or for anyone older who is mulling over the meaning of life. Steve Reifenberg waited nearly 25 years to write a memoir of the two years he spent working in a small Chilean orphanage. The "hogar" was run by a remarkable young woman, who created a loving home for about a dozen young outcasts. As "Tio Esteve" works in the orphanage, he not only learns a lot about each of the loveable kids, and about raising children (even difficult ones), but also about what life is really all about. Reifenberg's beautiful, clear prose skillfully interweaves the story of the children, of Steve's coming of age, and the story of Chile under dictatorship. I found the book to be thoughtful, deep and affecting. This is not just a book for people who love latin america, or who may love children. There are stories and lessons in here that will appeal to a wide audience. When I finished reading, I wanted to start the book all over again. Santiago's Children is not only the story of the power of good, but it reminds us that one person can still make a difference.

My daugter is serving as a volunteer in Santiago and has met the author, Steve Reifenberg. She was exuberant in her recommendation of his book. I must confess to living a sheltered life, and marvel at my daughter's generation for their passion for world travel, service and adventure. For those of us who haven't experienced the other half of the world, this is a wonderful window into the reality of it: its heartache of loving and struggling for the sake of children, as well as the cultural and political challenges. I believe that the hope of peace for our planet will be nurtured as we get to know our neighbors in this ever shrinking global community. Steve Reifenberg's book puts a human face on our global neighborhood. This book will stir your heart.And it makes a doubly good gift, because Reifenberg donates the profits from this book to the children of Santiago, Chile: two gifts for the price of one.

It might be unfair to recommend this book to others with the expectation that they could love it as much as I did. Like the author, I spent a chunk of my early 20's volunteering in a Chilean orphanage. I am sure, though, that everyone of a certain age can relate to the doubt and struggle that those early 20's years present. And his is an engaging story that artfully brings us to love the Chilean children of the hogar, while hoping for the best for the author. An absolutely wonderful read I could not put down!

This author is a man among men.To recognize the needy and be willing to physically do something about it , takes a truly caring individual. There are plenty of talkers but not many that will back up the talk!Talk is cheap!!

I read Santiago's children coming from two places :First as an avid reader of autobiographies. This one will remain a gem in my memories. It is seldom that one finds a life story so well written, funny, terribly moving, sad, authentic and yet so humble. Reifenberg takes you from the first chapter to the very last page through numerous simple - yet incredible - everyday life stories in Chile. This book combines epics from the childhood of Chilean orphans, their wonderful "mama", Chilean history and includes Reifenberg's own story in the background. I roared with laughter, was moved to tears, even sobbed and did not want this unforgettable book to finish. A must read for anyone !Secondly relating to the book as a career counselor. I wish that the choices my clients made could often take this path of self-reflection, as long, thorough and difficult as it may be. But where in the end one senses that the person has found his or her core values, the ones that will enable them a fulfilling career and life. Reifenberg seems to have set the ground for a lifelong self-understanding and calling during those two years in Chile.
