Baseball Genius 1 JALEN PEERED THROUGH THE WINDOWS of the Silver Liner Diner to make sure his father was still busy. A man in a black knit cap sat at the counter with a newspaper, a cup of coffee, and a piece of pie. In one booth a young, awkward-looking couple in fancy clothes scowled at each other, arguing in silence behind the glass. Jalen watched his father deliver two plates of his special stuffed calamari to the couple. While the Silver Liner was a diner, it was also much more: a place for authentic Italian food. While the two didn’t seem to go together, Jalen’s father somehow seemed to scratch out a living. When a car drove up with new customers, Jalen knew he had time to sneak off into the spring night. He snugged the empty backpack on his shoulders as he crossed the railroad tracks. Wind picked at his curly hair, and he paused at the wailing sound of a distant train. Beside the station stood a fast-food place, the lights on its big yellow-and-blue-and-purple sign extinguished for the night, since it closed after the last train arrived from New York. Jalen’s dad usually let his help go after dinnertime but squeezed a few extra dollars from the Silver Liner by staying open late, even after midnight, if he had any customers. Main Street was empty, but Jalen decided to take a detour and avoid the streetlamps. He jogged fifteen minutes to the other side of town, all uphill, to Rockton’s oldest and biggest estate. It had been built in 1782 by the great-great-grandfather (step-great-great-grandfather, she’d always point out) of one of his best friends, Cat Hewlett. Its heavy iron gates stood open, but he stopped to catch his breath. Fastened to one of the great stone columns by a thick chain was a bronze plaque letting visitors know they were about to enter Mount Tipton. Jalen wondered what name his home would go by if anyone cared to call it anything. Probably Broken Box or maybe Shabby Shack. He darted through the gates and into the shadows, avoiding the long, sweeping driveway and the lights buried in the grass alongside it. His friends were waiting for him at the corner of the stables. The rich smell of horse manure swirled deep in Jalen’s nose. Daniel Bellone didn’t even smell it anymore. He and his family lived above the horses, along with two other families who helped maintain Mount Tipton in all its original glory, trimming the gardens and grass, painting the buildings, scrubbing floors, and polishing the brass and silver when needed. Cat lived in the big house—as Daniel called it—but with her messy brown hair, scrubby jeans, and the sweatshirt she wore, she looked like she was the one who lived above the stables. “Ready?” she asked, snapping her gum and cutting the barn smell with a whiff of peppermint. She bumped fists with Jalen. Even Cat’s raspy voice and the smudge on her face couldn’t hide how pretty she was. “As I’ll ever be.” Jalen bumped Daniel’s fist, then turned to look down the hill, over the treetops, at the big brick house a quarter mile beyond Mount Tipton’s stone wall. The huge mansion sat on a hilltop of its own, bathed in soft yellow light. Jalen and Cat trudged off down the grassy slope, following Daniel, who knew the way through the tangle of riding trails better than anyone. They skirted the trout pond on a wide, grassy trail before plunging into the woods. The trees above swished in the wind. The beam of the flashlight on Cat’s phone flicked this way and that so that shadows of the thick tree trunks danced and jumped. When they reached the high stone wall marking Tipton’s boundary, Daniel pulled up. “You sure about this?” Cat asked Jalen, directing the light at their feet so that its glow lit the three friends’ faces. Jalen was surprised. “Why are you saying this now? We all agreed. It’s not like I’ve got a barrelful of choices.” “I could . . .” Cat’s voice drifted off on the wind. She looked toward the estate, but they all knew that her stepfather gave her nothing. “Maybe . . .” Daniel looked slightly embarrassed. His fee for the travel baseball team had been paid. His spot on the Rockets was secured. Without words, Jalen tried to tell Daniel that it was okay. Daniel’s parents were two of the hardest-working people Jalen had ever seen. It wasn’t his fault that Jalen couldn’t afford the travel team fees, and Daniel could. “Just . . . be careful of the dogs.” Daniel peered out from beneath a shock of hair as dark as the night and shook his head before uttering his version of a curse. “Hot sauce.” “I know.” Jalen patted his pants pocket and the pork chop bones wrapped in plastic tucked inside. He bit his lip and started to climb the rock wall, inserting the toes of his sneakers into the cracks. When he reached the top of the ten-foot wall, he straddled the flat fieldstones and looked down at his friends below. “Maybe we should go with you?” Daniel’s face was hidden in the gloom, and his whisper barely rose above the trees. “Thanks,” Jalen said. “But no. If it goes bad, I could be . . . I don’t know. Arrested?” “I don’t think—” Cat began, before a long pause during which her face grew grim. “Maybe.” “So, no sense in taking you guys down too,” Jalen said. “Thanks for coming this far.” “We’ll wait right here,” Daniel said. “We won’t leave.” Cat began to climb the wall. “No, Cat,” Jalen said. “I told you.” She reached the top and sat with her legs hanging down on the Tipton side as she held up her phone. “I’ll keep it here, in case you get lost. It’ll be a beacon.” Jalen gave her leg a pat. “If it’s not me for any reason, jump and run.” “It’ll be you.” Cat’s blue eyes glittered, even in the dim light. “You can do this. It’ll work, and you’ll be on that travel team going up and down the East Coast, knocking in runs and turning twos.” “Thanks.” Jalen let himself down a few feet before simply springing away from the wall and dropping to the ground. He didn’t look back because he didn’t want to chicken out. He plunged into the darkness of the trees, waiting for his eyes to adjust, stumbling through the open woods, his eyes fixed on the lights of the huge brick mansion owned by a New York Yankees star. Jalen’s stomach felt empty and cold and fragile, like a fist in wintertime without a glove. It wasn’t just the darkness. It wasn’t just being completely alone. It wasn’t just the danger. This is another Tom Tierney treasure book. All of his illustrationstuff are very inviting to a colored pencil.you can color and daydream all at once. This book has more extensive backgrounds than his usual books. I'm much more interested in the dresses myself. The paper is smooth and takes heavy shading of colored pencils very well. He also includes paragraphs at the bottom of the page explaining the articles of clothing and let's you know what colors were worn in that time period as well as the fabrics. I color velvet different from other fabrics just as I would color something sheer differently from something that was satin or cotton.

Recommend for an adult who colors, but could be used for a mature 9 yrs old. There are 45 pages of back-to-back opulent dress designs. Not as intricate as other coloring books ( Japanese Kimono Designs by Dover). Lots of billowing costumes, Might be able to use crayons, but I only use colored pencils. Paper fairly smooth. It's a challenge to come up with different color combinations, which I like. The billowing in the dresses have black lines to indicate folds, which I find a bit distracting, which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I enjoyed this book, it is one of my favorites

I purchase many of these type coloring books for my elderly mother. She especially loves the books that have pictures of people or fashion in them -so needless to say this is a book she loves to spend time coloring in. The pictures are detailed enough to make in challenging without being too hard on the eyes.

This book was a gift for my teenage daughter, she loves it. She's very interested in fashion, so the little explanatory paragraphs about the dresses are nice. This is appropriate for older kids and adults, the pictures are very detailed. The book itself is printed on a nice paper, my daughter prefers colored pencils, don't know how it would work out with markers. I will be getting her some more, she really likes these.

I bought this book for my mother as a gift and she loved it! in fact, I bought two for her because she kept sharing the pictures with her friends so, I decided to buy her an extra one. I would recommend This book to anyone. Who is into Fashion..

This is a lovely gift! I gave it to my daughter-in-law who is an artist. She just had a baby and had no time to paint! This gave her something to work on to keep the creative juices going not to mention great ideas and in a format where she could pick it up at any free moment. She was delighted! The pictures are very detailed and the costumes authentic! A lovely book for grown-ups!!

I collect wild edible and ethnobotany books as a hobby, I am a conservation biologist as a profession. I felt compelled to tell others about how this is the best $8 book I have ever purchased. It covers species that many others don't, and is almost entirely natives, not just a bunch of introduced species like some guides. Even after reading other similar titles, I learned a lot from this brief book. It is a must have, and is easy to bring in the field! Thank you for making it reasonably priced! Maybe we will be lucky enough to get a volume II someday.

I bought this prior to a Mark "Merriweather" guided foraging tour at the Caddo Mound State Park. I used the book to reference different plants seen on the tour. Until Merriweather's book comes out I am going to use this one. I enjoyed the pictures, especially showing where in Texas the plants are typically found. It does not show everything but covers a great deal. If you use it, use the index which also lists common names when searching for a particular plant.

Compact but incredibly informative. The writing is concise and straight to the point, with a consistent format that for each plant lists locations, alternate names, edible and medicinal uses, and cautionary/special notes. Each entry is afforded two photos, one for the plant itself and the other for its shoots or berries; the fact that the book is glossy and full color - and printed on quality stock - really makes it pop. This thing will suck you in the minute you open it up. Love it.

This is the the best foraging book I’ve found, and I have several others in my library. If you are a Texan, this book is for you. Now, some details:1. It’s not overwhelming in size, just appropriate to be useful2. The book is in color and nice3. Each plant page has 2 color photographs, sometimes roots, or stems, or bulbs besides the leaves4. Each plant gets its own page5. I actually have heard of many plants in the book or recognize them6. The book was written to be useful, not all-inclusive7. Each plant is described with medicinal uses included, along with a location mapI could have saved myself some money if I had come across this very helpful book first. A big thank you to the author.

It’s a nice book and a good place to start when interested in edible wild plants in Texas.My main complaints are that the book is very short, it doesn’t include many plants at all, and it doesn’t have information in how to identify the plant. You could not use this to survive in the wild.

Great little booklet with great pictures and easy to read descriptions of the plants of Texas. However, you better get two because if you let it out of your sight it'll go AWOL.I had mine for two days before a friend borrowed it and doesn't want to give it back because he's having too much fun with it. I have ordered a second and will probably order a couple more for gifts this Christmas.

I did not receive the updated version of this book as the photograph of the book indicated. I have to have this for a class, and it is mostly complete, but there is a decade of missing info.

I bought this book as a short refresher course of my furniture history knowledge learned in college. It did provide that refresher but I found it lacking somewhat.Despite being initially published in 1985, the book largely stops at mid-century modern (mid-50s/60s). Even the mid-century history is scant compared to earlier eras.

The book would be a great an not just good book if sometimes it didn't seem as if it assumes the reader is already familiar with some of the design an d furniture jargon. Considering the lack of visuals of some of the described characteristics of the furniture pieces it made it harder to visualize some things.other than that it was definitely informative and it made me see the value in pieces I hadn't previously considered.

Great little reference book. Needs more pictures, though. I used it to compliment my interior design history class and have not been disappointing.

Bought this for a class and it is a good book but a little dry. I find myself reading the first sentence of a paragraph and then swimming the rest of it and getting all the information I need.

Love the conciseness of this book. The text and photos are informative. And the size of the book is perfect.

I didn't read it, wanted it to draw furniture. I wasn't satisfied with the book but maybe it was my expectations, not the book. Since I didn't read much of it, I don't want my evaluation to count.

This is a really great book. It is very informative and is great for those who don't know where to start when learning more about the style of furniture throughout the periods. However it only covers western furniture, so those interested in any Asian or African styles of furniture and how it fit into that culture and time are out of luck.

Imagine learning that was how your family member was treated. Coincidentally, I have another great-grandmother who also died from an illegal abortion. She was told by her doctor that having yet another child would kill her, but having to have an illegal abortion ended her life instead.This book is a critical education for a generation of people who are unaware of the how outlawing abortion will affect - and end - lives. It is critical for those in positions of political authority who dare to try to dictate that a woman cannot end a pregnancy. Yes, it is a moral conundrum, but also a harsh reality that will never go away. Even now, states are making it extremely difficult for women to get the medical care they need, much less an abortion - and outlawing abortion will do nothing more than drive it into the shadows and doom legions of women to the unsafe abortions that killed two of my great-grandmothers and orphaned their children.Read the book. Educate yourselves. It is an excellent study.

"When Abortion was a Crime" by Leslie Reagan. Without a doubt one of the best books I have read recently, if you are as passionate about women's reproductive rights as I am and wonder about what it was like in the good old days before women's had rights to control their own bodies. I didn't know this book even existed until I was watching Rachel Maddow one night and the author was on her program discussing a paperback copy that had recently been released (I don't care for paperback unless I don't have a choice). So I bought a used hard copy of the book that had originally been in a Library in Illinois. That came in good enough condition and no major flaws in it. So far, I have had good luck buying used ones. Most have come in good condition. Sometimes only a few highlighted phrases here and there. But, that's immaterial. I can overlook it. I was raised in the 50's when abortion was illegal. I was raised in a small Midwestern coal mining town in a super religious family and had no idea such a thing as abortion even existed in those days. So if I had gotten pregnant I was just out of luck. That's how painfully ignorant a lot of we teenagers were in those days. It's a day and age I have no desire whatsoever to return to. Or to see my Granddaughters be forced to return too. It wasn't that great of a period in this country. This country was awash in racism, sexism was the order of the day too and what one viewed on television was mindless drivel designed for 4 year olds. I married when I was 17 and my mother stumbled through a description of what was going to happen on my wedding night. But, I didn't get a vivid enough description to have clue what to expect. That's just how dumb and uninformed a lot of girls like myself were. I am really surprised I didn't get into trouble when I was young, not knowing anymore than I did. I have always wondered about the issue of illegal abortion when I grew a older and wondered what it was like in the days before Roe. I knew next to nothing about the era. Just whispers I had heard from other people and had read about in passing. Something a lot of us hope our daughters and Granddaughter will never be forced to return too. But, it is looking like Christian zealots are going to chip away at Roe v Wade until it is just a shell of a law. Because the electorate keeps making the mistake of voting the type of people in office who are catering to these religious zealots. People often take their freedoms for granted until after they have been taken away. They don't comprehend when these people get through taking away women's rights, they will start in on African American's, Hispanic's and anyone else who doesn't live up to their immoral beliefs. And they will drag us kicking and screaming back to the dark ages of back alley abortions. But, they won't stop the practice. It's just going to cost them dearly in new tax dollars to add new law enforcement personnel, new judges to already over burdened court system, to build prisons to house all the new criminals in. But, it won't stop the practice. I don't know how many of them are intelligent enough to have looked at it that way. But, morality laws do not work and have never worked. It just brings on a worse society. They should have learned that for a few of their other misadventures like prohibition. This book covers most aspects of what it was like before Roe and should be required reading for anyone interested in women's personal freedoms. It was an enlightening book.

Exhaustively researched book detailing the social climate, politics, and paternalistic attitudes that led up to abortion gradually becoming highly restricted by the twentieth century. In a country where abortion has currently been legal for two generations, this book gives a much needed perspective for the now-forgotten, yet very grave problems that occur when safe abortions are unavailable.The "pro-life" movement is full of people who never stop to consider that their current efforts to restrict abortion access directly cause the injury, suffering, and death of women, particularly low-income women. It's tragic that these consequences have already been suffered and overcome once, and yet people ignorant of history are naively endeavoring to repeat them. This book should be read by everyone who considers abortion a social issue, rather than a private one.

When we consider the abortion, we often do so in a vacuum of information and a with a lack of historical perspective. This is true for both pro-choice and pro-life proponents. This author provides this information in a readable, organized fashion. She also does so without engaging in a polemic either for or against abortion per se. That being said, she is very clear that abortion has been with us throughout history, and the more severely abortion is repressed by the medical and legal establishment, the greater the deaths from septic abortions or from injuries inflicted by unskilled abortionists. I cannot recommend this very readable book too highly for everyone on either side of the abortion debate!

Fascinating book about a difficult subject, but the author has unearthed some amazing facts and shines a light on the dark area that is the abortion debate ...I'll bet most people , including women ,did not know just how widespread abortion has been over the years and just how much damage is done to women when the right to have a safe, early abortion is denied us.Also, extremely worrying is the fact that women were deliberately targeted by the medical,profession in their early turf wars for control over the various areas of medicine , particularly the areas around pregnancy, child birth and contraception...this is a must read for all,those interested in this debate , which continues unabated into the 21st Century..
