Very good book. Zizek is such a good writer/thinker. This is like the 6th or 7th book ive read by him. I do not think this is his best work though. An amazing book on Zizek is "Slavoj Zizek: Live Theory" by Rex Butler. Butler's book is amazing and really teaches you a lot about Zizek... about what Zizek's system is, what he is trying to see (the unsayable). In Butler's book, he also mentions that Plague of Fantasies isn't Zizek's best book. Nevertheless, Zizek is an amazing writer, and even if this isn't his best book, it still gets 5 stars. I look forward to reading more Zizek.In this book (as always) Zizek offers amazing interpretations on the history of philosophy. Zizek really says some interesting stuff on Kant... it inspired me to get a better grasp on Kant (I'm currently reading Roger Scruton's "Kant", which is very good).The reader absolutely must have a good understanding of Lacan to read Zizek. If you don't have a decent grasp on Lacan, Zizek will just seem like mush. It would also be good to have a good background in philosophy to understand Zizek.

"The Plague of Fantasies" is Zizek at his best: funny, irreverent, brilliant and sometimes just silly. Zizek is a master of critical theory: from Schelling and Hegel to Alain Badiou, he knows it all, and knows it in detail.In this book, Zizek discusses a number of ideas, all of which focus around one or another aspect of Lacanian theory. Make no mistake about it: Zizek is a Lacanian (he may even know Lacan better than Lacan did). He analyzes various aspects of popular culture and leftist politics. Unlike some of his other books, however, this narrative is fast-paced and moves right along. In terms of ideas, he is mostly a passer-on of those which he has derived from others: the violence of interpretation, for instance, in which the deforming of a text's meaning, though untrue to the author's aims, nonetheless produces a truth effect which justifies the deliberate (mis)intepretation, is borrowed from Paul de Man; or the problem of the desublimated Other, which goes something like this: let's say you're having sex with your partner and all of a sudden your mind wanders. What's happened? According to Zizek, borrowing from Lacan here, your partner has (hopefully temporarily) slipped out of the phantasmatic reference frame you've built around him or her, for Zizek insists that we are always viewing others within frames of fantasy, in one way or another.His discussion of the three types of shaven vagina in the book's intro is bold and fun; as is also his discussion of the semiotic differences between French, American and German toilets (perhaps a new explanation for the real [i.e. obscene] causes of the World Wars?)Zizek is at his best and most entertaining in his analyses of movies. In the book's Forward, his comments about John Carpenter's "They Live" is priceless (I'll forgive him his reference to "Spielberg's Star Wars Trilogy,"; after all, one can't get everything right); his discussion of the leading motif of Spielberg's films being about the absent father, or the father figure who has lapsed in his duties and must learn how to make up for his lapse by defending his neglected family against the traumatic impact of the Real of some monstrous force (i.e. Nazis, dinosaurs, aliens from outer space) is a great insight, although he oversteps his bounds when he says that these films are about nothing else. That is false, trust me. There are all kinds of wonderful mythological and cosmological updates and retrievals going on in Spielberg's films. (A dose of heretical Jungian theory here might have helped him out a bit).In any case, this book is a great place to begin if you are interested in reading Zizek. Though I don't always agree with him, he hardly ever fails to entertain me (except when he goes into long pedantic discussions about the function of the Ego in Fichte or Schelling's concept of the Absolute; I mean, come oooon!) In great books, it's the personality of the author that counts, and so one does not read Zizek so much for his ideas (since, let's face it, they're borrowed from just about everybody who's anybody in Critical Theory) as for the entertaining effect of his personality. He is a great raconteur (like Reagan) and tells great jokes (also like Reagan) but in other respects, he is entirely dissimilar from the former US president.As Zizek, I mean, Lacan, would have said, borrowing perhaps from Coca-cola: "Enjoy!"--John David Ebert, author of "The New Media Invasion" and "Dead Celebrities, Living Icons."

There are two subjects people shouldn't mention in a social dinner conversation: religion and sex (some may also add politics). People should withhold their potentially controversial opinions for a more suitable venue. But it is perfectly alright to talk about oneself, and that's what most people usually do. Slavoj Zizek talks and writes a lot about sex, about religion and about politics. He seems to have a view on everything, and is ready to spill it all, without restraint or taboo. But there is one subject he doesn't mention very often: himself. Apart from the biographical sketch at the beginning of each book (and this reedition of The Essential Zizek gets a revamped notice, complete with his stint as a presidential candidate in 1990), we know surprisingly little about Zizek as an individual. He seems to be a larger-than-life character, but he doesn't disclose much about himself.The Plague of Fantasies nonetheless contains some biographical elements. Military service is mentioned twice, and from this fact alone we can deduce that it must have been a life-changing experience. The Yugoslav army was divided along ethnic lines, and as many militaries, it was strongly homophobic. Zizek relates some episodes of everyday life in the barracks: obscene pranks revealing the disavowed homosexual libidinal economy underlying the homophobic ideology, or the sexual insults exchanged as common greetings among comrades. There the signifier acquires a life of its own: a soldier who confesses he would like fried eggs for dinner is submitted to an obscene ritual that has to do with a Serbo-Croat pun on "eggs on the eye"; and references to one's mother's or sister's sexual life are exchanged as friendly greetings among individuals otherwise sensitive to the extreme about family honor.Going through military service exposed the aspiring intellectual to the shock of the Real; but it wasn't an altogether negative or traumatic experience. As Zizek notes, "every intellectual knows the redeeming value of being temporarily subjected to military drill, to the requirements of a 'primitive' physical job, or to some similar externally regulated labour - the very awareness that the Other regulates the process in which I participate, sets my mind free to roam since I know I am not involved."There are also several references to Yugoslavia under communism, to the war in Bosnia, and to people's prejudices towards the Balkans. Surprisingly, the worst distortions seem to come from people close to the scene. Emir Kusturica's film Underground is criticized not for its overt bias towards the Serbs, but because of its 'depoliticized' aestheticist attitude that, according to Zizek, comes close to a neo-Fascist perspective. Peter Handke, the Austrian novelist and playwright, turned against Slovenia when the country became independent and since then directs attacks against that nation that would be labelled as racist and xenophobic in any other context.According to Zizek, 'Balkanism' functions in a similar way to Edward Said's 'Orientalism': the Balkans are the timeless space on to which the West projects its phantasmatic content. But Zizek is no Slovenian nationalist nor a nostalgic of the former Yugoslavia. To those who want to separate the 'baby' of healthy nationalism from the 'bathwater' of ethnic fanaticism, he replies that "in the matter of national identity, one should also endeavor to throw out the baby (the spiritual purity of the national identity) in order to reveal the phantasmatic support which structures the jouissance in the national Thing."But perhaps it is misleading to look for biographical elements or contextual references in Zizek's texts. An intellectual reveals himself not by exposing his inner self or relating his life story, but by stating his tastes and distastes and by acknowledging his debt to a pantheon of authors. Here Zizek's personal landscape is much clearer, and he doesn't try to deceive, impress or avoid the public's gaze. What he writes is what you get. Zizek practices the art of the self-portrait through close reading of philosophical texts, references to novel plots or music compositions, and movie commentary.To his core theoretical apparatus of Lacan, Hegel, and Marx, he adds a vast array of cultural references, spanning from high brow to low pop. The philosophers he revisits in the course of this particular book are, in historical order, Malebranche, Kant, Schelling, Kierkegaard, Adorno, Arendt, Althusser, Deleuze and Badiou. I purchased the format "mass market paperback". The book is tiny, words are slightly bigger, than on a medicine bottle. It will be very hard to work with.

Great read. Victoria Sweet delivers as both a medical historian and clinician who values slowing down and the value of understanding patients whole story. This book left me pondering how have we moved so far away from the physical exam and lasting doctor-patient relationships. Slow medicine is the medicine of the future.

I loved Victoria Sweet’s first book, God’s Hotel which I just “happened” upon at the library. I was excited to see she had written another book, Slow Medicine. I was more than willing to pay for it since the library didn’t have it. What a great writer and a wonderful storyteller. Sweet reminds us of how medicine used to be and how corporate practices,in an effort to make it more efficient have,in reality, made medicine inefficient. She weaves interesting cases, personalities, procedures, and a bit of history into a book you won’t want to end.

I was very eager to start this book, I truly love the concept and support the idea of slow medicine. the book starts out excellent setting a stage as to why we need a change in our healthcare system. Chapter by chapter I kept waiting for some form of solution in all the stories but found none. What I heard were stories from a privilleged author who liked to point out how much better they were at medicine than others. At how much more attention to detail and caring they were but ran at the first sign of resistance to what they believed in. This is eveident when the the description of the pharmacist is given. The words can't hide how much the author loathes her colleagues in other disciplines who most times and as two other accounts have given save her from death mistakes. Instead there's a pattern of running from those hard challenges. I hope you enjoy but this was not the journey I expected and that's fine, it's good to disagree and here the other side.

Must read for the students, medical residents and young generation of the physicians who will take our current, fast Medicine to the future, whch currently looks bleak...Very well written. You do not need read the entire book - one can find a lot of important insight in different chapters based on their clinical interests and past experience.

Is this a bad book? No. But is it good? Is it complete? Is it comprehensive? Can you easily find specific information? Well... that's where the problems come in.First of all, let me say this, so that anybody reading the review has some idea of where the reviewer is coming from. I used to use AE quite a bit several years ago, but I basically haven't touched it since at least 2014. So there's a LOT I don't remember too clearly about exactly how everything works, and it's a complex program, obviously. And just as obviously, there have been a lot of updates (even though the basics are the same.) I always used the Trish and Chris Meyer books in the past, but the last published edition was in 2010. So, as far as books... there aren't a lot of choices. There are a lot of random videos out there, and there's also lynda.com (more about that later), but there are just not many selections at all for the old school analog book.First, the good: This book is well-written, and the examples are clear. The tutorials are fun and well-paced, also well-explained. The basics are... well, KIND OF basically covered (shape, text, animation, layers, masks, puppet tools, rotobrush, color correction, 3D features included the camera tracker, advanced editing, rendering.) The problem came in when I started thinking about how well this would all work for someone who was a REAL beginner rather than a past user who just hadn't picked up the new edition for a few years. Because the truth is, the basics aren't really covered, and here's the proof.Look at an old copy of the last Trish and Chris Meyer 2010 book, *Creating Motion Graphics With After Effects.* I have a copy on the desk right now. It's 752 pages. The Classroom in a Book is 399 pages. Yep-- 752 pages to cover the OLDER version, and 388 pages to cover the NEWER version, with all the added features. Lots and lots and lots of the essentials have been cut out. Look for a list of keyboard shortcuts-- it's not there. Look for the older, much longer chapters going into detail about fundamental concepts like layers and keyframes and editing-- not there. Look for xyzabc etc etc etc... not there. In 388 pages, it CAN'T be there.So why not just go to a source like lynda . com, you ask? I've had that membership for a long time, and I think I might even renew it again. THAT is where Trish and Chris Meyer went, and their instructional videos are there. But here's the problem with a video lesson format: you're tied to the pace and teaching methods decided on by the people who *made* the videos. There is no reference manual. And that's what the Classroom in a Book desperately needed to be. I do not have a lot of patience for going through videos and spending literally ten or twenty times the amount of time I would spend to look up something in a true reference book. Sometimes, we need specific pieces of information easily and quickly accessible and put together in an understandable way rather than having to sit through several twenty minute videos to try to figure out something very specific that we want to do. (The Adobe help and user forums are absolutely not a solution either, which is too bad.) What really needed to happen is for Trish and Chris Meyer to keep coming out with books, whether in print or online format. That's really what they should do-- online editions of updated AE books-- instead of 100% sticking to videos That is the strongest aspect of the Classroom book, btw-- when you buy it, you can go online to peachpit press and use the online version. But I don't think it's enough. I haven't decided yet if I'll be returning this book, but that might happen, even though it isn't exactly bad... it's just not good enough.PROS:Does have some good infoTutorials are well writtenDoes cover some of what you need to knowOnline version included with the purchase is very nice.CONSDoes not cover the basics very wellDoes not contain comprehensive information about the nuts and bolts of AE in the way that the Trish and Chris Meyer books didNot a reference book, which it needed to beNot long enoughEmphasis on tutorials rather than constructing the "building blocks" of the basic knowledge you need to use AE as a tool.WAY too expensive for what it is.Overall, this isn't a bad book to have in your library... but I would seriously also buy Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects, 5th Edition. Even though it doesn't have info on the most recent updates, it comprehensively covers the basics, and the new CiaB does not. For $56.50, the new book needs to offer more than it does.

I've used a few classroom in a book textbooks for my graphic design courses at Arizona State.This book is just terrible compared to the books for InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. This book is full of typos, small dark pictures, and unclear instruction. I would not suggest getting this if you're a complete newbie to After Effects. If you've managed to mess around with the program and have a good feel for it, I would suggest this book as a guide at best. However you would probably be better off saving your money and following along with a tutorial found on Google or Pinterest.

I don't think you ever work though a complete project. It's very disorganized and jumps around. Like the author was going "oh, let me show you this. oh let me show you that." You start a project then its confusing because the next section doesn't pick up where you left off, you just abandon it.

I really wish I had taken the bad reviews to heart. It's extremely frustrating, what with the mistakes in the book combined with very tedious and complicated instruction. It became too much to tolerate, even for a patient person, by the fifth chapter and I have, for now, given up on this book.

i've paid tuitiion fe es for multiple college level graphic design courses that simply teach from these books. The adobe textbooks take the "long way" to explain everything, but its detailed. and it works. ... been very successful with other Adobe Suite Applications.

Kindle version: Lots of typos. Long captions unnecessarily describe everything in each screenshot. I wonder if a draft copy mistakenly made it into the Kindle distribution. Otherwise, the content seems fine - a good refresher/update for someone like me who has been away from AE for several years.

This was a great 101 introduction to After Effects. It's full of basic tutorials and some resource full tips for new updates and shortcuts included in the 2018 version. However, there were a few misprints and missing information in some tutorials that I had to google search and ask a pro about. However, if you want to begin the steps of learning after effects...this is the way to go.

I highly recommend this book for women -- young and more mature -- as well as for men, as they face hormone issues too!

I thought this book was about balancing hormones, but it's all about weight loss. However, I wasn't looking for a weight loss book. I wanted to learn more about oils and getting my hormones balanced without the addition of bio identical hormones, but I couldn't get through all the weight loss stuff. The author included lots of essential oil formulas, and I guess that could've been good for someone who already has a cabinet full of 20-30+ oils. I spent 2 hours in the book and confess I didn't read every page. When I realized it wasn't what the title inferred, I returned the book the next morning. I gave the book 3 stars, because it may be helpful for someone else.

I am so excited about Dr. Mariza Snyder's new book. In my functional medicine practice, many of my patients are interested learning more about the intersection between essential oils and natural health. Dr. Snyder has been my go-to expert about essential oils and their clinical applications for years, and this book is an excellent resource. In a very easy to read format, she explains the how hormone dysregulation can cause havoc in the body, and she gives you great information on how to confront these challenges while incorporating essential oils in your daily routine. Highly recommend!

SO disappointed in this book. The diet is SO unhealthy! Meat, dairy, eggs. Salad dressing with 1/2 Cup oil, seriously! Better get yourself a cardiologist lined up. If you’re some one over 55 or have had a hysterectomy, book is of no real value. Sending book back.

My book arrived last night and I cannot put it down! Written by someone who has experienced fatigue, over-drive, stress and hormone imbalance, her book is an easy read complete with self-help tips which are manageable. The Essential Oils Hormone Solution provides answers to questions women have struggled with for ages. Every woman should have this for themselves, their daughters and their mother.

Wow, I can't put this book down. Dr. Mariza has done a wonderful job explaining it in simple words that anyone can understand. I suffer from bad menstrual cramps so I am willing to try her techniques to finally find relief. I am going to do the 14 day rescue plan. Dr. Mariza has put a lot of research into this book and the different chapters in it. This is one book that I will definitely will read again. I also purchase this book for my sister can't wait for her to read it also. I think every woman should read this book. Dr. Mariza I can't say THANK YOU enough for writing this book!!!!!

As a new broker I found this book to be a great resource of ideas and practical examples on setting up a farm. I also found the advice on how to use social media to be spot on! I highly recommend this book to any Realtor looking to start or improve their marketing efforts. 5 stars!

The book was short but full of useful tips. However, those tips are very general. There is a lack of focused steps showing you how to impliment them other than the occasional website link. Many of the ideas are good but I would have liked to see even more detail including actual examples of mailers, newsletters, and videos. More than anything, I would have liked to see real data on which techniques offered the most ROI on time and money instead of just a few antidotes from the author's only 2 years of selling real estate. At the end of the day, it is worth the read but it is not an 'in depth' guide to farming your market.

I just got done reading this and there's some good tips. It starts of very basic with things you'll hear everywhere else. But then you get some golden nuggets to help you stand out from the other agents in your area.I gave it 4 stars cause of the typos.

I am fairly new to real estate and just beginning to farm my first neighborhood. The suggestions in this book have enabled me to jump start my business with confidence.

I really enjoyed reading this and highlighted many passages with great tips and ideas. A very useful resource for real estate agents interested in being useful resources in their neighborhood.

I am so excited that this book "The Real Estate Marketing To A Farm" has given me the understanding of how to find and pick the right farm area to market. Tremendous great ideas to use in my marketing expansion to get more listings Thank you!
