In the author's note, she says that she has relied on Patrick's letter of confession and interpretations of it for her biography. Without the tale of St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland and the legend of the shamrock (although these do appear in the note), Tompert must turn to Patrick's real life for drama, and she finds plenty there. Kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery, Patrick came to his calling to convert Ireland through visions. Garland's artwork--a full painting facing every gilt-edged page of text--does a good job with detail and texture; there is also a folk-art feel to the pictures that makes the book accessible to children. I teach Kindergarten Sunday school at my church, and I am always looking for good books to read during snack time to keep the munchkins from tearing around the room when they've had their fill of crackers and cheese and apple juice. For the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day this year, I wanted a beautifully illustrated, engagingly -- yet simply -- told tale of the biographical basics of this great saint. Thank goodness for this book! It more than answered the call. The children were transfixed by both story and pictures -- even my assistant was enchanted. What a lovely tribute to an amazing man of God!One interesting note: The cover shows St. Patrick holding a shamrock -- the tradition being that Patrick used the clover to illustrate the idea of the Trinity. Then, on the title page, there is another shamrock. But the story of his using the shamrock is curiously absent from the text. A minor quibble, of course, but this reader would not have minded an extra page (an extra gorgeous illustration!) of that story.

I purchase this book to be a part of my Saint Patrick's Day display at my apartment complex. It was a wonderful editions to my display. Many people came by and read this book. I got so many compliments.

Good book about Saint Patrick. 3 and 4 year old loved this book. Will work great for any Catholic wanting to convey who St. Patrick is to their little kids. Good for younger grades as well.

Ann Tompert, an excellent author of children's books, has done it again in her wonderful style of writing. It will be most enjoyed by those 5-10 years old, with 3rd to 5th graders being able to read it for themselves. She wrote this book based on the facts present in one of St. Patrick's letters. It is primarily about his life to when he got home from his slavery, and prepared to return to Ireland. Only one page is spent on his ministry in Ireland. Then it talks about his days of slavery and incarceration later in his life ending with how his being in Ireland has continued to affect it. There is only one page of writing for every two pages open. Most pages of writing only have 7-12 lines of typing on them. The illustrations are great. As the School Library Journal Editorial Review states it: "It is mounted in an exceptionally handsome format, with a formal presentation of the text on yellow backgrounds richly framed by borders of brown and gold, facing full-page, mixed-media illustrations of power and distinction, gleaming with brilliant color. The artistic style is decorative yet forceful, with an interesting variety of landscapes and flat, simple, but very expressive human figures."

We used this book in a "Five in a Row" style the week before St. Patrick's day and my kids got so much out of it. It's a little book full of great information about a great Christian. It was an introduction for them to missions, persecution, slavery, Ireland, the Trinity, and more. We followed up our study with Celtic music and a meal of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, green shamrock-shaped honey rolls and green lemonade just for fun.

This is a great book for people who wan't to know a little basic information about the life of St. Patrick. It explains wonderfully for children and adults! It talks from birth to death. There is little information about his childhood, but Ann Tompert covers it best she can.

In the spirit of full disclosure, the daughter who curated and published her mother's letters from Yemen is my neighbor. I didn't know her mom. Also, I didn't really have a clue as to why her mom would be writing letters from Yemen, or where Yemen is, exactly, or why the letters might be of interest. But once I started reading, I couldn't put this little book down. Jean Mondon is a good travel writer, great at describing paintable scenes. She is also a lively and adventurous person: At the age many people retire, Jean decided to spend, without a partner, several years in a tribal village in Yemen working for an NGO as a midwife. I had expected a rather stoic memoir, but there are decided ups and downs, candid admissions of personal and political failings, and touching descriptions of hard-won triumphs in gaining the trust of the village women. In "my" culture, the closest thing to the author is a Mormon missionary, but they go in pairs, live amongst themselves, and have a rule book to follow. Jean Mondon had none of these things. Instead, she had herself, an itch to travel to strange places, and to do what she could to help.

Letters from Yemen gives you an insight in to a world where women have little say about their lives, and where life is harsh. I met Jean Mondon once in Palo Alto, when she was visiting her daughter who is my friend. She told me of being called to help a hemorrhaging pregnant woman and having to have the permission of the Chief before she could go in the house to help her!!! As a doctor, I was horrified. Her letters tell more of this time, and given the current war there, I see her letters as so insightful. Even back then Yemen and Saudi Arabia were not getting along well.Sue and her sister have done a very fine job of editing them, and explaining what happened when Jean got home. Her desire to help others cost her 2 more years to get her own health back! But she got it back and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro after that. She is an inspiration to all women who wish to feel useful in their older years. Do not miss this book.

Letters from Yemen is an enriching read, offering firsthand perspective into the adventure of strong, independent Jean Mondon, and her endeavor to be a positive force in an exotic place. Her triumphs and frustrations are candidly described here, in personal letters to her family. This book addresses a courageous episode in an extraordinary life. There are brief references to her other ventures, and I'd be interested to learn more about this intrepid woman. Her life story would make a compelling movie. These letters, chronicling Mondon's time in Yemen, were published by her daughter, who is, herself, an artistic, inspiring woman with whom I'm very privileged to be acquainted

Each volume of the series is written by a different author, so unevenness is to be expected. It seems, however, that I began at a very good place.Numberless fans of the Pixies arrive at the band through Nirvana; to be more specific, through Kurt Cobain's famous comment that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was his attempt at ripping off the Pixies. I, for my part, cannot even claim this. It was my brother who read Kurt Cobain's comment somewhere, then told me that the Pixies were worth checking out. Before that, back when I was in college, someone had let me borrow _Doolittle_. The person described the album as "indie pop," which resulted in me carrying the CD in my backpack for months before I saw the person again and returned the CD to her, unlistened. If Sisario's book had been my introduction to the Pixies, the story would have been different.Fast-forward 12 years. I am now a Pixies fan and I own all of their studio albums. I may not consider _Doolittle_ their best album, but it is definitely their most accessible, and (as a result, perhaps) their most influential. It is also a highly original work. Part of the reason behind that, as Sisario explains in the book, is that _Doolittle_ was made by largely self-taught musicians who wanted to do something different, to stay away from clichés and, as the saying goes, carve their own path.Sisario's book displays an engaging style and enlightening information from those involved in the making of _Doolittle_. The author met with Black Francis, who provides most of the information, but also with David Lovering, Joey Santiago, and producer Gil Norton. Sisario gives a brief history of the band, but most of the content of the book is analytical. The volume explores the dark themes present in the album and the surrealist connection, which is crucial when it comes to appreciating the album's lyrics. The book consists of five chapters plus a concluding section (comprising more than one third of the book) in which Sisario explores each of the songs contained in _Doolittle_.I would say that for a series like 33 1/3 the key question is: does the book enhance the experience of listening to the album it describes? In this case, the answer is definitely yes.As I said above, this is the first 33 1/3 book I read, so I cannot compare it to other volumes in the series. I will definitely explore other titles, as this one has made a very good impression on me. I'm interested in the books on Nirvana's _In Utero_, Nine Inch Nails' _Pretty Hate Machine_, Michael Jackson's _Dangerous_, David Bowie's _Low_, The Rolling Stones' _Some Girls_, and the Ramones' debut album, among others. This was the first in the 33 1/3 series that I have read, and I've been tempted to read many. It absolutely succeeded in that the reading of the back really changed the way I hear "Doolittle." Sisario's book acts as a remastering: Guitar parts become clearer; bass lines stand out; lyrics become understandable even as they purposely ebb and flow throughout Norton's mix. "Doolittle" has always been second to "Surfer Rosa" with me, but the book helped me understand the band, the song construction, and the making of "Doolittle" in a truly objective way.My only wish is that there would have been more authorial subjectivity and less reliance on interviews/past reviews. Too much reliance/trying to find literal truth on lyrical meaning (which trip up a lot of rock writing). However, after reading this I am looking to forward to reading more in the series. (Inspired to finally read this after having read Dwight Garner's glowing review in the NYTimes a week ago about Gina Arnold's homage to Liz Phair's "Exile in Guyville" Why I read "Doolittle" instead is unknown to me. "Exile" is next, or possibly "Murmur."

The first thing to know about the 33 1/3 series is that since each book is written by a different author, each book will have its own tone, style, and in some cases, format. For example, the book about Radiohead's OK Computer is a dry analysis of the music theory behind the album, while the book for PJ Harvey's Rid of Me is actually short fiction. So it's important you read the description and reviews of each carefully before purchasing.Thankfully, the format for the Doolittle installment is more straight-forward than the examples I cite above: it's written in the basic long article style you'd expect to read in Spin or Rolling Stone. That's not very surprising since the author, Ben Sisario, is a regular contributor to these magazines. Through interviews with the band members (especially Charles Thompson and excluding Kim Deal, who refused to participate) and others involved, he quickly covers the formation of the band in 1986 and their early and quick success (in England, at least) with Come On Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa, before moving on to the main subject.Not surprisingly, there is a lot here about Thompson's writing influences, especially his interests in surrealistic art (its influence is most notable on "Debaser", which begins "Got me a movie! Ha ha ha ho! Slicing up eyeballs! Ha ha ha ho!" after the Bunuel and Dali film `Un chien andalou') and religious & mythological storytelling, ("Ole Neptuna's only daughter" & "Then, God is seven!") which came to their greatest fruition on Doolittle. Sisario does a good job of getting the story on Thompson's oftentimes obscure, almost impressionistic lyrics. Sometimes, as Thompson admits, words came for no better reason than a rhyme pattern, yet they always seem to coalesce around the themes that interest him.Of course, there's also a good bit here on the music. Joey Santiago talks about his influences, especially the minimalist note painting of Wes Montgomery and the `Hendrix' chord. (E7 sharp-9, which Hendrix used to add just the right edge to the verse in `Purple Haze'. Santiago went up a step to F7 sharp-9 to create the menacing drone in chorus of `Tame') Sisario also touches on Lovering's assured and bombastic drumming and Deal's thumping bass, which anchored the music while the melodies flew by. Interviews with the producer, Gil Norton, show his genius for corralling the band, especially Thompson, to get the best album possible. (Though the Pixies were well-prepared for the sessions, and it's implied that the relative failure of their next two albums could be attributed to poor band preparation for them. Though how much of that was from the already-rising tensions anyway?)But it is the contrasts that make The Pixies, and especially Doolittle, so great: Deal's angelic voice as a counterpoint to Thompson's screams, the quietloudquietloud verse and chorus dynamic, the humor tinged lyrics of rape, incest, and violence. Sisario goes into great detail on the musical effects and meanings in a song by song breakdown after the main text, and I found this to be the most intriguing part of the book, required reading for anyone who loves the album. Thompson was the main songwriter and driving force of the band, but Sisario ably demonstrates how all the parts created a whole that pushed alternative rock to a place I would argue it has yet to return. (He talks of the odd paradox that the Pixies have influenced so many without creating a single band that sounds like them.)This book is a must for any Pixie fan. It's well-written, informative, and an all-too poignant reminder of the genius of a band that left us too soon.

In my opinion, the general part should have been a bit shorter since every DIYer is well familiar with the very PV basics. Nevertheless the book is well written and contains lots of practical information –the site survey tips, ‘whether to go solar’ checklist and the cheat sheet at the end. The examples seem quite adequate and well developed. I think they will work and I‘m going to apply one of them to connect my laptop to solar power.The book describes various free software tools for PV system design. I wonder whether the authors provide a similar sizing tool and whether it’s free or not.

Make sure you have your engineering degree prior. Book is literally one long math equation instead of “explaining” each part the authors just use math equations to flood the entire book to show off their degrees. Hate to break it to you, but unfortunately the majority of the population has not been installing solar panel systems for the last 20 years. (Hence the reason i bought your book). I thank you for the massive math equation with little to no explanation on anything. Jokes on me.

There are many publications on the subject, but in my opinion this book represents a truly comprehensive and practical guide about how to design and put together all of the parts of а solar power system. The book may save many hours of research and confusions and in the same time is full of practical shortcuts and applicable hints.

If you want to build working solar power system on your own, this book is an excellent starting point. And, not only. When you prefer to understand, what you are doing and why, no doubt this reading will guide you through every step you took. It is not so common nowadays a technical subject like this to be presented in a book so that virtually everyone can understand. Therefore, do your research! And then you will be happy buying this book. :)

As a homeowner interested in going solar, the book was helpful and provided useful information, but some sections were a little more technical (many formulas) than I needed. More helpful to me was the authors' other recent book, "The Truth About Solar Panels", which I recommend to anyone interested in solar electric systems.

Lots of sound, practical advice and all the calculations you would possibly need to design a solar power system.
