Stuart Reges is a principal lecturer at the University of Washington where he teaches computer programming, programming languages, and discrete structures. He is co-author of an introductory Java programming textbook with Marty Stepp titled Building Java Programs: A Back to Basics Approach. UW CSE’s Stuart Reges has won the 2011 University of Washington Distinguished Teaching Award, which is given to faculty who show “a mastery of their subject matter, intellectual rigor and a passion for teaching.” Marty Stepp is a computer science lecturer at the University of Washington where he teaches intro programming, web programming, and software engineering. Google highlighted his web programming resources in their Google Code for Educators initiative, and he was featured as the Seattle PI’s “Geek of the Week.” Stepp is the lead author of Web Programming Step by Step , with Jessica Miller and Victoria Kirst from the University of Washington. He is also co-author of Building Java Programs: A Back to Basics Approach with Stuart Reges. Stepp wrote an online tool for practicing Java problems to accompany the Java textbook, called Practice-It!. He is also first author of Computing Fundamentals with C#. From 2004-2006, Stepp worked as a computer science lecturer at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Before that he spent a year as a developer at Microsoft on the Excel team. Great book! Sorry this is not a review for people who want to know about the contents but I just have a warning of all who wants to buy this product. STOP NOW DON'T CLICK THE BUY BUTTON. Go do yourself a favor and get the bound version of this book or even buy it from a friend. I bought this version thinking I could fit it inside a 2" binder no problem and use it through the school year. NOPE was I wrong... The pages are the same quality of any you would find in any math text book, flimsayyyyy.. And since it is hole punched it rips easily when you are trying to flip through the pages at lightning speed. So either you be very careful and slow while flipping through this book or you go do yourself a world of good by buying the bound version. Getting it bound by other stores and services will cost you about 50-150 ish dollars. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ money out the window. The price of the other one is 50 dollars more. PLEAse PLEASE PlEasE go buy that one and you won't have to deal with the troubles I had to go through.

This book is overpriced. Personally, I find the chapter very difficult to follow along with because of the strange teaching methods the authors chose to use. They show tons of incorrect examples that don't work. I suppose they think that by showing how a person might code something incorrectly you can learn from the mistakes but over all it is just really confusing when you are trying to follow along and learn. Maybe if all that had been added at the end of chapters in a "common mistakes" section or something it would have been more readable for beginners.Most importantly, I would like to note that despite what the title says, you DO NOT GET ACCESS TO THE 4TH EDITION AS AN ETEXT. You only have access to the 3rd edition online which is useless if your professor is using this book because the pagination is completely different. The eText app also doesn't work on iPhones so if, like me, you were hoping to access the eText for reading while commuting rather than carry this beast of a book around, you are out of luck.As a third note I think that it is important to mention that the authors seem to have thought that including inappropriate cultural references to make the programming more interesting was a great idea and it was not a great idea.UPDATE: I had to actually buy supplemental books for my programming course just to be able to understand the material as this book was so confusing and unhelpful.

My wife is using this text for a required intro-to-programming class. I've been following along, and I'm not impressed: the exercises are very vague in places, and don't do a great job hitting the relevant material. As far as pedagogy goes: it seems way too easy: everything is quite surface-level. For instance, there is a whole section on throwing exceptions... but it doesn't bother to mention try...catch blocks; only throwing. Pretty weird. (There is a try/catch discussion in an appendix, but I couldn't find it for a long time since it's not mentioned in the very sparse Index.) I really didn't think the exercises were quite right for teaching critical beginning-programming topics.Overall I found the treatment of the content much too slow and superficial. I'd recommend Deitel and Deitel's Java book instead. It might err on the too-detailed side, but I prefer that. Also: this text seems to be a copy of Deitel & Deitel: the chapter layout seems very similar; it's almost like a watered-down rewrite. I don't know which came first originally, but regardless Deitel^2 seems like the better of the two.

This book is full of useful information, but sometimes I found the structuring a bit weird. They would spend multiple pages showing you a way to do something, only to tell you that was the wrong way and then show you a different way. Also, through certain examples, they randomly stop explaining or completing the problem and don't show you a final version. Was frustrating. I learned most from the included online videos. Also, one time I dealt with Marty Stepp directly, and he was very terse and rude in his correspondence, for what it's worth. Sorry Marty.

Good book, but the DRM on it is super oppressive.Kindle is a great experience for readers, but whenever I see "e-textbook" as the format, I have reservations about buying, mostly because of my experience with this book.After reading on 2 devices, you will run into "License Limit Reached"... which wouldnt be so bad if you could go somewhere in "Content and Devices" under your Amazon account and uncheck an "allow this book on this device" or something similar.Instead your only option is to unregister your devices and hope that does the trick.Or, of course - you can buy another copy digital copy.Recommend getting a physical copy, skip the e-textbook.Physical copy - 4 stars,e-textbook - 0 stars

Do NOT buy the DIGITAL COPY!! They have DRM on this book so you can only have it on two devices. So if you want it on your laptop, desktop and your iPad... too bad you can't! I wish I could get a refund because now I have spent over $230 on a $100 textbook. Normal kindle rules should apply!

I had bought this book many years ago when my son was much younger since he loves to learn about animals. Well this book is so informative that i ordered it again since our last one was lost during moving. My son is now 24 and was asking about it for his younger siblings because of the value he found in this book. This book is being read constantly by my younger children, it is a easy and good read. They enjoy the images as well.

This is an amazing book. We bought the original edition for our son about 15 years ago. He loved it so much he still has his. I purchased this edition for my granddaughter & she seems to love it too.

It has made a great science resource in our homeschool library. My eight and five year old daughters enjoy reading it.

The book is short and there is a good introduction to machine learning theory. For each section there are python examples. I red the book while getting to work on the bus on my kindle and was for me a good starting point to understand more about AI.

The downloaded excel data is garbled, which means the whole book is useless for me!

The print version of this book has all five stories combined into one book binding. There are 530 pages of text plus a few more for the list of choice paths at the end. The table of contents is not in the traditional format so you have to look for a minute to find where each of the books starts. There are no pictures in this book. The problem is that the format of the book and the reading level/interest level do not match. A child who is comfortable with holding and navigating a book this size likely will not be interested in the content. A child who is interested in the content and for whom the reading level is appropriate will likely be intimidated by the format. I did appreciate the page near the end asking for reviews to "help readers decide if the book is right for them." I hope this review will do just that. Best wishes and happy reading.

I had a peek but I'm saving most of this for the Christmas holidays because it will keep the kids occupied for ages. Looks to be just as good as the dinosaur one and the jungle story with the wizard- which both went down well.

Not bade. The chapters are well written, but I completed the first story -without dying- in maybe 30 minutes.

This is a great collection of the You Say Which Way interactive fiction books. Ideal entertainment for older kids during long winter evenings. I think The Magician's House will always be my absolute favourite, but this collection gives plenty of variation in locations and storylines. A tropical island, a magical house, a bike trail with portals, a spaceship, and a dangerous flooded world are all waiting to be explored, with the reader choosing the way each adventure will head. In fact the total number of story options available from this set of 5 books must be massive!

What a great collection of stories. I loved them all! I always enjoy the hours of reading you can stretch out of the stories. The best part is being able to choose the direction you would like the story to go and then go back and change the direction time and time again. This collection would make a great gift, especially for a young aspiring author because it demonstrates the many turns a plot can take! Great reading. I highly recommend it!

My daughter loves all of these you say which way books. She's read all of the ones included in this bundle, and she is constantly asking me if there are new books out. Creative, thoughtful kids will enjoy tracing all of the available paths to see how each one ends.

A great collection of adventure stories set in numerous locations with lots and lots of possibilities. You say which way you want to go and see where you end up. Superb value and tons of fun to boot. You can't go wrong!

I am pregnant for the first time and had so many conflicting views on whether I could run, how long I could run, how fast I could run, whether I pay attention to my heart rate or respiratory rate....it was overwhelming. All I knew is that I ran before my pregnancy and wanted to continue while I was pregnant as long as it was safe for the baby. THIS book was perfect for me and anyone out there that has these same questions/issues. It is absolutely a good thing to run while you are pregnant (as long as you arent high risk). This book is great as it describes how and why it is ok to run, when it is not ok to run, and describes each month- how you will feel, how running will feel, etc. Easy to read and so informative. GREAT book! Definitely recommend it!!!

This is a fun book that details briefly the changes that happen to your body during pregnancy and focuses on the runners body. The author had first hand experience of running throughout her pregnancy. The factual data is supported by 2 page case studies of women runners who had children. Some of them ran all the way through, some switched to cross training and some had to stop. There is a whole spectrum of experiences.It is an inspirational and supportive book, and helped me get through my exercise on days when I did not feel like it. I also passed it on to my mother when she had issues about my exercise .I recommend it to any runner thinking about having a baby.

I was in week 7 of a couch to 5k program, training to join my marathoner husband in a ragnar relay race when I found myself unexpectedly pregnant with our 2nd child. Since this is my second pregnancy, I already have the books with "week ___, your baby is the size of a ___ and is developing _____". I don't need that information. What I was looking for was information on what training I could safely do during pregnancy, and what specific pregnancy-related concerns I needed to watch out for. This book had very little of that sort of information - it was perhaps 1/3 information on running and 2/3 basic pregnancy information you could find in any other pregnancy book.If you're already an experienced runner, and you are a first time mother, this book would probably be ideal. But for an experienced mother and a beginning runner, I didn't find it all that useful.

I stopped running when I became pregnant but this book helped me to get back to it. The basic advice is to run at a comfortable pace, slowing to a walk if you are so out of breath you can't talk and stopping if you feel dizzy, etc. I appreciated the stories of the women in the book who have run though multiple pregnancies and are realistic about expectations of when to get back to racing.

If you are a runner (casual or competitive) who is trying to conceive or is pregnant get this book! I loved it! I got it while trying to conceive (my second) which helped motivate me to keep my training really regular so I could continue throughout my pregnancy. I ran early in my first pregnancy without this book, and wish I had read this first. I stopped running around 4 or 5 months in my first pregnancy because I didn't know much about running and pregnancy. I am pregnant with my second and have really utilized the information in this book.

This book has some good advice for continuing to run throughout pregnancy. Listen to your body and stop or rest when needed. Go by how you feel instead of the old 140 heart rate max traditional way of thinking, which is what my own doctor told me.

This book provided a good guide for staying active during pregnancy in general. However, I am an avid long distance runner and did not find the information to be detailed enough. I ran through my entire pregnancy which I didn't feel this book addressed either.

I liked this book, it was recommended by a woman in my running group. It doesn't give you any hard and fast answers but maybe that's because every pregnancy is different. Some of the tidbits about real life moms who ran through pregnancy are inspiring, from a woman who ran a 3:45 marathon when several months pregnant to the woman who had to scale back her training due to pregnancy. I would recommend this book to runners who get pregnant and want to keep running while pregnant.

I am writing this review because my cousin wanted me to read this book and, having done so, I figured I might as well make my comments public. I am a clinical endocrinologist in Hawaii in practice for 30 years, with a slightly academic bent.I would give this 4.5 stars, if possible---my overall recommendation is that many people should read this book! I am sympathetic to the author's main points as they apply to people who do not have a metabolic disease: Many of the recommendations for dietary restriction that are made by health care professionals for people in general are lacking in a solid scientific foundation. When there is evidence for potential harm, the actual risk for an individual is often exaggerated. And when we think about the potential harm to a person's health from consuming a particular food or drink, that should take place within the context of a person's life, the pleasurable aspects of eating or drinking that particular item as well as the social context.Now for some criticisms, which are probably more meaningful to someone who has already read the book:1. The author tries to convey to the reader the importance of looking at the type of evidence that is reported, whether a study is retrospective or prospective. The strongest evidence comes from (prospective) randomized double-blind placebo-controlled studies. When looking at outcomes such as a coronary event or death it is difficult or impossible to design such a study for alcohol, coffee, meat, eggs, etc. Doing any prospective study comparing consumption vs non-consumption is a challenge. Consequently he relies very heavily on what are called meta-analyses of retrospective studies in which an author selects studies from the medical literature that meet certain criteria and then pools the results in some way. While doing so is better than cherry picking studies to support a preconceived viewpoint, the decision about what criteria to use may introduce bias. Also, putting together data from a lot of weak studies does not make a strong study.2. The author says that his recommendations are for healthy people without metabolic problems, but if one looks at the American adult population, that excludes a very large number of people. Many people do not even know that they have metabolic issues. Also, many of the studies that inform us regarding the effects of various foods and drinks are based on data that include people with metabolic disorders.3. The author seems to lack a larger perspective on the issue of cholesterol metabolism and misrepresents a few issues, I believe. He says that serum triglyceride levels are associated with heart disease, but he does not mention that they are also inversely correlated with HDL-cholesterol levels, which are together a part of what is called "the metabolic syndrome." It is this (genetic) disorder of metabolism rather than the triglyceride levels themselves that is bad for heart health. Second, he lumps monounsaturated fats into the same category as polyunsaturated fats, which is incorrect because monounsaturated fats have a positive effect on cholesterol metabolism, not the same for polys. Moreover, he fails to discuss the strong support (including prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled studies) for the cholesterol hypothesis that higher LDL-cholesterol levels cause coronary disease and that lowering these levels reduces risk.4. In the Introduction he claims that the obesity epidemic of the late 20th century was caused by the shift from intake of fats to carbohydrates. In his chapter on Butter he states: "There is one thing we do know about fats, however. Fat consumption does not cause weight gain. To the contrary, it might actually help us shed a few pounds." I believe the obesity epidemic is more accurately related to an increased total calorie intake available through fast foods, etc. To state that fats do not cause weight gain is on the face of it ridiculous, but what I believe he means to say is that substituting equal calories of carbohydrate for fat will not achieve the desired goal. The problem with a quick lunch of hamburger, french fries, and a soda is neither the fat alone nor the carbohydrate alone, but the total calorie intake as it affects weight.I learned a lot from reading this book and plan to look up some of the studies that he references. This is a very worthwhile read.

When I was a kid, there was a seasoning called Accent. Both its TV commercials and its canisters featured a little horn with the slogan: “Wake up the flavor.” We poured that stuff on everything (except for our Captain Crunch), often accompanying our culinary adventures by making little horn sounds.It turns out Accent was pure MSG. Who knew? And yet we lived to tell the tale. Neither me nor my siblings ever got headaches as kids. Or ever get headaches as adults. Indeed, we seem to have acquired some headache immunity from using this stuff. (Correlation, not causation, a good researcher would say.)The reason, as you’ll learn in The Bad Food Bible, is that MSG isn’t bad for you, even apparently in the quantities we devoured. (Yes, we know – you get a headache when you go to a Chinese restaurant. That could be your imagination, or you may be one of the few people with a sensitivity to it, just like a few people have sensitivities to other foods.)MSG isn’t the only maligned food. Is butter good for you or bad? Milk? Artificial sweeteners? Organic foods? Sugar? Meat? Red meat? Tuna? Coffee? Wine? Eggs? Salt?Oh, and don’t forget gluten. Turns out, virtually every one of these foods has been studied in depth…and here the studies in both directions are summarized and sourced.I feel like this book plays it right down the middle and that the thumbs-ups and thumbs-down can be trusted.

Very entertaining and informative book about nutrition and diets. I am a retired nurse and have always felt that common sense was the basis of a good diet. And I have also cast a skeptic eye on any research studies that banned one kind of food or diet. Dr Carroll deals with these and other issues. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a balanced and sane diet. I also recommend is YouTube channel, "Healthcare Triage." I'm a regular watcher. This is the kind of book you want to read more than once but you also want to shave with friends and family.

Loved this book, the most significant thing I got out of this book is how nutrition research is lacking at best, how things become trends from small sample size studies, I know people are always looking for the magic bullet, we want to be able to eat anything then take a pill to negate the calories. Deep down I think most people know how they should be eating, there is no great revelation, eat anything in moderation.

This was an eye opener very help for me to eat better.

The book is organized into eleven chapters dealing with particular hot-button food issues--GMOs, coffee, butter, meat, gluten, alcohol, salt, eggs, diet soda, MSG and non-organic foods. Along with the usual sections like an introduction, noes, index and acknowledgments there is the author’s conclusion/philosophy. I found this particularly helpful because after reading each chapter I could see how the conclusion incorporated the material in a common sense guide with an eye, but not obsession, toward healthy living.Each chapter explains current research and/or thinking on the subject so the reader can form an opinion on the matter, or at least see that often nutritional advice stating certain foods are to be avoided may simply not have sufficient scientific evidence backing the claim. The book is written in a way that makes what can be dry/tedious nutritional information accessible, easy to read and follow. The conclusion chapter helps the reader consider a broader view that permits enjoying food, one of the pleasures of life, without unnecessary anxiety. I learned a great deal and recommend the book.

Great book! Aaron always writes in a way to keep you interested.

Excellent book. Lots of good advice, but probably best geared towards a fairly health literate audience.
