Second read. This review is of the 1997 edition. This book served my purposes well, in that I was looking for an overview history of the entire period of American involvement. Karnow delivers on that, and also provides some broader context of the ancient Vietnamese history, its history as a colony, and the French war in Indochina.Originally published in 1983, Karnow includes updates from later visits. His first-hand reportage and interviews with leading figures (such as Giap and Westmoreland) give this account some immediacy and weight. If anything, Karnow was there, living these events and connecting them with other people who lived through them. Some of these interviews must have been for a related TV series at the time, and as far as TV-associated books go, this definitely rises to the top. Too, the photographs are well chosen and underscore the narrative, bringing this period to life. Karnow certainly understands the major issues, and for the most part covers the war adequately from all perspectives. For all these reasons, it's easy to see why this book is frequently recommended as the one-volume history to read.Yet, I wanted more from this. I find the first three chapters difficult to get through, mainly because they weave backwards and forwards in time. The first chapter is sort of an update to the earlier editions, covering Vietnam since the end of the war in 1975. The next chapter goes backwards, dealing with Vietnam as a European colony. Then the third chapter goes back even further, dealing with the long Vietnamese historical struggle for independence, often against China. To be sure, all of these chapters are worth reading -- and understanding Vietnam's long conflict with China is still relevant today -- but they are not arranged chronologically. After this, though, the book gets rolling. If there's one theme that comes through loudly and clearly, it was that Vietnam was fighting for its independence for a long time, and that this will to national autonomy and unity was something the United States could not beat, as others before it had tried to do as well. This seems banal to write, because it is well known by now, but it is nevertheless important to remember and still a salient takeway from this Karnow's history.Looking at the endnotes, it appears that much of the research was based on secondary sources that were used before the original publication. There are some limitations to this approach, mainly that there's little to no obvious archival work, but also that the books used for research are themselves dated. The coverage of North Vietnam seems a little weak, for understandable reasons, more understandable in 1983 than perhaps it is today.I also would have liked a better understanding of the military aspects of events, and Karnow seems to shy away from the kind of military descriptions that Rick Atkinson or Barbara Tuchman, other journalist-historians, excel at. Instead, Karnow focuses on higher political maneuverings, as the last chapter about the Nixon era especially highlights. So, given that this is a book about a war, I can't say that in either reading I've come away with a better understanding of how it was fought day to day. Even so, it remains a good starting point for a general reader looking to understand the dynamic sweep of Vietnam throughout its history, but especially for the American involvement in that country.

This outstanding book deservedly won a Pulitzer Prize. It benefitted from the fact that Karnow was a journalist in Vietnam for several years and, in addition to being able to interview many of the key United States figures, was able to interview important Vietnamese military and political people some years after the war ended. An example of this is that a Vietnam military person admitted that the Tet Offensive, although very significant from a political standpoint, was a failure militarily and a mistake. Karnow describes in great detail the process by which the United States became embroiled in Vietnam during the Kennedy administration and became increasingly embroiled during the Johnson and Nixon administrations to their great consternation. We learn that some people, including McNamara and Clark Clifford, enthusiastically supported the War but became disenchanted as time went by to the point that Clifford worked behind the scenes to reduce our involvement.Karnow relates how U.S. military leaders consistently favored more soldiers on the ground and more bombing while Presidents Johnson and later Nixon vastly overstated our military success. We learned some key things that are still not fully appreciated:1. We need to better understand the history of any country with which we become involved militarily, including the nature of its people and their aspirations. If we had fully appreciated that, we would never have become militarily involved in Vietnam. North Vietnam wanted more than anything to have an independent nation after centuries of domination by China and decades of domination by France. Ironically, Ho Chi Minh comes across as a somewhat sympathetic person.2. Just as we learned in World War II, bombing does not win wars. More bombs were dropped by the United States in Vietnam than during the entire Second World War yet the bombing was largely unsuccessful.3. Motivation means everything. The South Vietnamese soldiers we trained were no match for the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese because the latter were much more motivated.4. Our support of local governments can be counterproductive. The South Vietnam government was largely corrupt and much of the money and weapons we supplied to it was wasted.5 As great as our military is in fighting conventional wars, it is much more of a struggle when the enemy soldiers do not wear uniforms and blend with the local population. This was a constant problem in Vietnam that led to many U.S. casualties and also to the killing of innocent civilians.Krakow's narrative, as great as it, does not quite do justice to what happened in Laos. The U.S. was forbidden to send military forces into Laos but the CIA conducted a massive secret war there that included enlisting the help of Hmongs who were courageous fighters against the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese as they sent supplies down the Ho Chi Minh trail.I did find the last chapter was somewhat disorganized and somewhat confusing chronologically. But that s a minor criticism. I highly recommend the book and for me, the paperback edition was preferable to the Kindle edition partly because of the many photographs.

Excellent book written by a journalist who was there and has an impressive array of contacts. Karnow includes tons of pictures, an extensive chronology, a glossary of names with brief biographies, an index and the occasional map. Vietnam: A History gets called the bible of Vietnam and with good reason; the history begins in the beginning which was the 2nd century BC, continues through 1996 and goes on for 768 pages. All this complete with thorough documentation. Disappointingly, however, the paperback covers are somewhat flimsy as are the pages. I'm considering buying a hardback version. Otherwise, Karnow typifies other chroniclers in being a bit leftist politically though I believe he's taken his role as historian seriously; therefore his account combines his experiences in Vietnam with a more objective, broader view.

One of the best and most comprehensive histories on the war--I esp. liked Karnow's focus on the first Vietnamese War with the French (1946 - 1954) as setting up the conditions for the US's own involvement.

#622,902 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Rosemary and Claire set out to inspire people to “travel through authentic food,” and they’ve accomplished their goal with this first book in what promises to be a truly inspiring series.I’ve travelled a fair amount, and experiencing local foods is always high on my must-do list. But even for a seasoned traveler there’s always a bit of wondering (Am I really experiencing the authentic?) and occasionally a bit of worry (Is this a little too “authentic”?). This book takes care of the research part of food-based travel, and their research into local chefs, markets, food destinations, food styles, and dishes, is comprehensive. It helps that the authors aren’t just doing research; they’re doing a lot of eating (and shopping, and talking, and picture-taking, etc.). Recounting a lot of that in the book makes this more than a handy guide to hot spots or meals—it's a model for how to really experience a place. Some of my favorite moments in the book were those prefaced by caveats like “If you are feeling adventurous…”. And the authors also periodically acknowledge the unease that foodies might have in a new place—and then they offer safe options and suggestions. As a vegetarian, I especially appreciated their insights into how to avoid meat even in meat-centric Argentina. It’s thoughtful touches like these that bode well for the series in general. I’m looking forward to what they write about Southeast Asia, their next destination.

Among the travel guides, this book deserves attention. The concept of travel and discovery of a country through its culinary resources is probably not new, but here the authors have invested themselves by traveling the entire country during 6 months and often mucking in. So you can be assured that anything described here has been tasted or experienced by the authors themselves.First, this is an invitation to travel but a slow travel, at human scale, that takes the time to meet the local actors, to discover its culinary culture and its way of life as for the Argentine each meal is an opportunity to meet and exchange. You will discover an in-depth “terroir” Argentina, far away from the simplistic cliché of the Argentine steakhouse. Detailed photos, fully commented good tour addresses and many practical tips to the traveler fill the book. Interviews of local chefs come perfectly illustrate the point. The “Savor This” chapter is a real comprehensive inventory of foodstuffs and typical dishes that can be found in Argentina. Ah the famous empañadas! It responds to these crucial questions that arise to each foreign country visitor facing a local specialty: what are the ingredients in this? is it salty, sweet, spicy? and finally will I like it? Beyond the recipes and the composition of the products, you also find cultural information and amazing anecdotes on the different specialties. The wines, including the famous Malbec, are not forgotten. You have a very well documented section on the Argentine vineyards. Finally, it is a must to prepare for one's trip and even though you may not have plans to go to Argentina, this guide is a journey deep into the Argentine soul which illustrates this phrase from the French epicurean author Brillat-Savarin: “Tell me what you eat, I'll tell you who you are”.

Argentina has long been on my travel list, and I'm beginning to think about how I want to plan a trip there. I loved this book, as it gave me a great starting point as someone who loves to experience a culture through its food. While most guides are fairly general and might have one or two insider perspectives, this book really seems to give you the inside tips of how to eat like a local. I love that Rosemary and Claire don't push the reader away from things like street food or public transport like some guides might. They have really traveled the country and spent time there, which you can tell when reading. Their love of the country and food and the journey really comes through.Experiencing culture through food is, to me, one of the best ways to really see the world and get to know a people and place. This guide is thorough and clear, and I am looking forward to using it to guide my own adventure!

I would call this book: My Food Guide to Argentina.I have traveled all over the world, and normally rely on a guidebook like Rough Guide or Lonely Planet, which describe a few foods, and then lists restaurants by location with no real guidance on exactly how to eat or what to order. However, this book is perfect for trip planning! It describes the foods and where each can be found, down to region and shop or market type. I also like the sections 'Unique produce', 'How to eat and shop like a local', and 'Unique culinary experiences', giving insight into the local food culture.I imagine the book is also great for reminiscing on a past trip to Argentina, as some foods are described in detail. So many useful tips and good food information!

This is a wonderfully written book that takes you through all parts of Argentina and the food that makes their culture so rich. The authors are unafraid to try different foods and really bring it to life for you in an honest way that brings it to life for you as if you were there. I've travelled to Buenos Aires several times and enjoyed many of the dishes the book describes, but I was surprised to read so much about the food native to other regions (so naturally, now I have to go back). Beyond that, the book details the people that currently help keep the cuisine fresh and innovative, while staying true to their roots. This book will be great if you love to learn about food, have been to Argentina and want to try something new, or are planning on going to go to Argentina and want to eat like a local and know where it all comes from (culturally and where it's sourced).Pro tip: Eat first before reading though, otherwise you'll find yourself with a hankering for asado!

"Why Christians Can't Trust Psychology' is a simple read and can be grasped mostly without a dictionary. There are certain terms that need looking up, but that is to be expected with any scholarly book. While he doesn't throw the proverbial baby out with the bath water, Buckley sheds light on a controversial topic. For people who want the other side of things as it relates to psychology, and is looking to be objective about the good and the bad of psychology will find a great resource in Buckley's book. But as the title states, the concern is primarily for Christians, especially as it pertains to the issue of the sufficiency of Scripture. Is the Bible really all we need, or do we need psychology plus the Bible? This book attempts to answer that question in thought provoking ways.

Anyone that wants to meet the mental and emotional needs of God's people and wants to understand why psychology cannot do the job, this is the book! As a lay counselor, I found solid information as well as resources listed. A must read by every pastor.

a 10-star rating, this book would get it. Not only does it elevate God's word to its rightful place as "all we need for life and godliness" but it helps make that practical by each chapter having on-going true-to-life vignettes which helps the reader see how to apply the principles. The author is very detained in going through why psychology--even "Christian" psychology--is an empty hope. Sometimes he covers ground previously covered by the repetition helps. He doesn't deal with issues like brain injury or Alzheimers, which does change how competently a person can think, but, taking the Bible as the authority, we can know that there is a level where the Spirit can work and so we can even comfort/challenge those people with God's truth and trust Him to work. A lot of us don't want to take the work required to actually know God's word and also to wait on His timing and way of working with another's spirit.

Basically it's about choosing a relationship with God over that of popping a pill an thinking your way into mental health. Nothing you didn't already know.

A must read for all true believers. Don't be fooled by Christian psychology.

Great counseling tool for all counselors.

this is a must read

Despite the 1990's cover art, this is a very good resource for anyone counseling.
