I thought the book was going to give 'insider' travel and touring tips for those visiting Antigua and surrounding areas today. Perhaps I should have read the book summary more closely; it is actually a detailed look at the city's development and its history, describing all the places to see from an historical perspective. For those who are interested, the author presents a fascinating yet singularly focused background on the city's development. Her expertise is unquestioned, however I found the writing somewhat dry. Still, I look forward to visiting Antigua soon and I am sure I will share her love and fascination with this beautiful place.

This book proved to be perfect. We traveled to Antigua and read it from cover to cover. It is rich with historical information and photos with no excess information like a guidebook would have. My traveling companions bought a second copy in Spanish!

How many of the Visitors of Antigua have no Idea of the rich history of Antigua. This Book of Elisabeth Bell can Help. Far above of what one can find in the usual Travel books, this book is the most comprehensive I was able to find on Antigua's history.I live every year a few month here in Antigua and have found that it is an ideal spot for retirement.I am writing presently a book to recommend Antigua as an ideal retirement spot. I definitely will recommend Bell`s book as a Must for reading to all considering living for longer periods in Antigua. They will enjoy their new place of living even more, if they know more about the rich history of the City of the eternal spring.Richard RiverskyAuthor of A Retiree Now? Are you planning a visit to Antigua Guatemala? Read Elizabeth Bell's Antigua Guatemala: The City and its Heritage first! If you aren't planning a visit, leaf through this book and you will reserve a ticket as soon as possible. Bell's book is a marvelous introduction to the history, architecture, and art of this important colonial city. In addition to an excellent historical introduction, the book includes monument by monument descriptions, museum summaries, and references to specific art objects. Photographs, a comprehensive bibliography, and a charming map are also included. Bell's devotion to the scholarship of the area and the restoration of this beautiful city are remarkable. The book is a terrific introduction to an intriguing city.

Antigua has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the New World. Once the darling of the Americas, she was virtually abandoned after a devastating earthquake in 1773. Thus, we have one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the Americas.I became smitten with Antigua while on a holiday from missions work in December 1995. What began as an innocent walking tour with Elizabeth Bell, became a lifelong love of this beautiful city and her people. With Bell's book (and candle, in case night set in), I visited almost every building or ruin and soaked up the romance of this beautiful city. After marrying in 2002, the only choice for our "luna de miel" or honeymoon...Antigua, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. And of course, we packed Elizabeth's book.

This writer provides a very readable book after researching the PEER REVIEW JOURNALS that contain the research she refers to in the book. She does not serve up her opinions very often and simply presents the research in an accessible style that most adults could read and understand. Other books about gut microbes are not as firmly based on peer review articles as this book is.Collen is an evolutionary PhD biologist which is essential in understanding this particular topic. Very briefly, bacteria were the only organisms on the planet for about 3 BILLION years. All other organisms that have arisen on Earth were born into a sea, an ocean of bacteria. And all of those organisms have had to deal with that bacterial ocean... or die. It's really no wonder the bacteria are the ones that are really controlling things.I am in my 30th year of teaching community college biology courses for nursing students and my degrees are both in microbiology. There's a lot of junk pseudoscience out there... but this book is not one of those. Here in my last year of teaching, we are reading this book as a supplement to our regular text, and going through each chapter as a class. If you don't read this book, you are missing out on a lot of answers to yours and our chronic health problems... from autism, obesity/overweight, allergies, diabetes, autoimmunity, antibiotic overuse, and diet. How we cultivate our microbiome is the key to understanding health in the 21st century.Without any reservations, I recommend this read.

The burgeoning research into the functions of microbes we pack around in our digestive tracts is standing decades of health science on its head. This well written survey of health changes modern societies have seen over the last 75 years, the links to antibiotics & cesarean births, and our dietary changes and their combined assault on our gut bacteria diversity & balance describes beautifully how we are creating modern epidemics out of diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases (autism, tourettes, lupus, MS, etc).If you are interested in youth own health, that of your children or grandchildren- this is a great resource. The author treats the subject from a scientific aspect to build a solid understanding how we got where we are, and then goes into what we can do about our own health and the health of those we love. There's a bit of humor sprinkled throughout and the writing style is easy to follow. This material should be mandatory reading at the high school health class level in all developed nations. If it was- our shopping, eating, birthing and health attitudes would be dramatically different and our health costs would be reduced.

I've read a couple books now on the human biome, and this book is by far the best one of the lot, particularly for a lay reader such as myself. Alanna Collen is a science writer with a PhD in evolutionary biology. That has given her the rare gift of fully understanding and knowing the science and at the same time being able to explain it to the nonscientist. The material in each chapter is backed up by plenty of peer-reviewed scientific papers. There is no pseudo-science or hype here. The facts are presented as accurately as can be.There is plenty here to sink your mind into, assuming of course that you have control over your own mind. As Ms. Collen shows in the book, however, there is evidence that our gut biome influences our minds and our actions. It's compelling information. And that's just one small part of what is in the book. There's the question of obesity being caused by the microbes in our gut. There's the point made about not only how we were born but also whether or not we were breast fed influencing our lives because of the microbes that we may or may not have gotten in the first few months of our lives. And of course, there's much much more.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about their human biome. It covers the subject well in layman terms while at the same time, it never talks down to the reader. This book is very well done and the author did an excellent job in putting it together.

Fantastic book. Extremely well written and chock full of very important information - how we can hurt our microbiome and how we can help repair it. I am begging everyone I know to read this book, especially people considering becoming parents. This book will arm you with essential information about how to give your child the best start in life, microbially speaking. I could not put this book down.

I like using herbal remedies and find this book an excellent reference. There were some parts of the book which wouldn't advance and I had to bypass to move on to the next part. Otherwise, I enjoyed reading the information on each herb.I think most people will enjoy this book and find the information useful.

Very easy to read and simple recipes. I like how you don't have to go digging in a million places to find the ingredients for her tea recipes.

Beautiful hardbound book! Would even consider it a "coffee book" style. Gave this as a gift for my daughter this Christmas who absolutely loves it! Not only does it this book contain herbal recipes for the common cold, allergies, stomach aches, etc, but it also lists recipes for chronic conditions. These recipes are easy to find thanks to the layout of the index. But my favorite part is the information provided at the front of the book which explains the types of teas you should buy and why.

Quick read,I will use this book as a reference for making my own healthy tea. I would recommend for anyone who wants to better manage their health.

I wish the tea types were listed in the table of contents for kindle. Not a huge deal I really like book.

Very useful to me in selecting what teas will benefit my diabetes

Great advice and recipe s buy it you will like it. I have tried some and they work. Buy it.

What a Great book! Easy to read, informative from the Get Go, and I’m really glad I got it.

Ok this book is good, it conveys lessons that novice programmers can understand. My only problem with it was that it was my textbook for college where we were instructed to use Matlab on homework problems where this text uses Fortran to show examples. If you know Fortran then go for it, if not, then it would be best to look somewhere else. There are plenty of Computational Physics texts that use different programming languages that one could be familiar with.

A good guide in learning how to apply computational physics to various problems.

It is a great introduction, but some explanations to the topic are unclear or murky

Let me begin by saying that I have read through many books on computational physics and this is by far the one that I prefer. It seems suitable for use in a classroom or for self study. The writing style is clear, almost conversational and new concepts are developed carefully and can be easily understood. The unfortunate part of the book is of course the use of Basic for the examples. I agree with the author that this language, and especially the version used, is suitable and even easy to use for the subject at hand, however it is not an industry standard language.I would much rather see C, C++ or even Python used for the examples. It is not hard to translate from the Basic versions, but many readers of this book will be scientists, but not generally computer scientists. And they may be learning to program as they are using this book. If the examples were written using basic C syntax, the reader would be well on his way to learning not only computational physics, but a widely used language as well. With this light criticism, I really like the book and have not found anything that I would prefer regardless of the programming language used.

This book is straightforward and enjoyable. Takes 'theory' for messy real world problems and makes it practical with rather simple methods.

The book came in better time and better repair than I had expected. Cover and pages near-new, arrived on the first day of the predicted time (like 4 days or something). I would recommend to anyone who's found a good deal through them.

I'm glad I bought this book. I was hesitant at first, while perusing it in the bookstore, because it seemed to be aimed at an audience that is, well, too undergraduate. However the book gets directly to the essence of the algorithms used to carry out simulations: nothing extraneous. Within an hour after sitting down to read a chapter, one can often have the first working code finished. It is through trying simulations, playing with parameters, and seeing what happens that one starts to get a feel for the models which are otherwise just differential equations on paper. The style of exposition is informal and lively. The range of subjects covered is diverse. It presumes the reader is familiar with physics of the models discussed, yet each chapter begins with a short review. The book is organized in a way that permits skipping around, which I like, and I found that the exercises are packed with suggestions and new things to try. All in all it is a very good book for someone who may know next to nothing about a particular physics model and wants to learn it though computer simulation.Since the publisher doesn't include the "search inside" feature, here is a list of chapter headings:First numerical problems. Realistic Projectile Motion. Oscillatory Motion and Chaos. The Solar System. Potentials and Fields. Waves. Random Systems. Statistical Mechanics, Phase Transitions, and the Ising Model. Molecular Dynamics. Quantum Mechanics. Vibrations, Waves, and the Physics of Musical Instruments. Interdisciplinary Topics: Protein Folding, Earthquakes, Neural Networks and the Brain, Real Neurons and Actions Potentials, Cellular Automata.

I have found this book to be an outstanding resource for teaching computational physics. As others have noted, the emphasis on this book is generally on the physics with less emphasis on the methods, but enough to usefully reproduce what they have done. I am not sure how it would work as a textbook for the students and, indeed, I have not tried to use it in this way. Certainly, at least in an undergraduate course, it would need to be supplemented by more discussion of numerical methods.
