I purchased "The Private Equity Playbook" by Adam Coffey and, frankly, I couldn't put it down. As a former owner of a nationally recognized middle-market service company. I wish that I had this book a few years ago. The author states that his book is a primer on the private equity business, but I believe that it is much more--I've read other books on the subject, but for brevity, de-mystification and just plain enjoyment this one beats them all--by a country mile.Coffey is a maverick. He sees himself as a blue -collar CEO/ He left home at 17. After a stint in the Army, he worked as an engineer and then changed to the business side , rising to middle-management with General Electric. Private equity recruiters came calling and he listened. For the last 20 years, Coffey has been President/CEO of three different national private equity backed companies. Each company has grown exponentially under his watch. And, he tells you how.The author likens the experience to building a winning team. He introduces two players , "Josh" and "Rose" ( a mirror of his former self ). Josh is the CEO of a middle-market service company. He has built the company into a recognized leader in it's field, and is thinking about selling out. He knows little about private equity and wonders if this is a viable exit strategy.--Rose is a " Fortune 500" middle-market executive who gets calls from private equity recruiters looking for a CEO/COO in a private equity backed middle-market company. She is doing well now, but wonders whether she should make a career changeThe heart of the book is Coffey's recounting of his own journey in the problems that he faced and decisions that he made. Among the many points that the book covers: private equities growth from 312 firms in 1990 to over 5300 firms today with over $3 trillion in assets under management--over 50% of middle-management companies to have a private equity partner in the next few years-- various type of funds today--the "playing field", the players and how they fit into the decision making for Josh and Rose--the rules of the game and the specific questions that Josh and Rose must ask themselves as well as the private equity firms--why an investment banker is needed--why the acronyms IRR,MOIC and DPI are so important as measurement guidelines--how partnering with a private equity firm is an accounting game changer--how EBIDTA can be fluffed up to accelerate growth--growth strategies through organic growth , price, product or service, rebranding and blue ocean search--equity creation for management through the ABC waterfall--why IRR is mandatory in the game--buy and build strategy with mergers and acquisitions--how to beat a recession-- how outside consultants could actually be worth the cost--why a private equity partner can create generational wealth for both Josh and Rose for years to come, " The gift that keeps on giving".Everything in the book is tied to Coffey's personal experiences in putting together a winning team. This is a fascinating read, down-to-earth and hands-on. Highly recommended

This book is an easy, insightful read geared mainly for two types - 1) Fortune 500 leaders contemplating a switch to a private equity (PE)-owned middle market company, or 2) the business owner looking to sell to a PE firm. The content is very accessible to anyone with a basic business acumen; Coffey's plain speak breaks down the landscape, operating mindset and keys to maximizing outcomes with PE firms. The paradigm presented is the reader is an athlete preparing to play a different sport (similar to a baseball player learning cricket), and it is divided into sections supporting that paradigm. There are nuggets of insight on nearly every page, and you're left feeling mentored by a pro. Required reading for anyone climbing the corporate ladder or selling their business to private equity.

Adam Coffey is one of the most experienced executives out there when it comes to maximizing the value of a company owned by a private equity firm. He's had three outstanding company experiences in a row and now, in terms both interesting and easy-to-understand, he explains how he did it. It won't take you long to read it (182 pages) but the lessons will help you for decades.

As someone new to the PE platform company world, this book was extremely helpful in scratching the surface of many facets of the world I’m now living in. Great introduction to different sides of partnering with PE and has inspired me to ask many questions of myself, my business, and my future. Highly recommended!

I often study people, placing 10% weight in what they "say" and 90% weight in what they "do".Was recently introduced to this author through business and each time we have an encounter, I am increasingly impressed with his enthusiasm, leadership and vision.I have been blessed over my career to have multiple great mentors and coaches and this author (Adam) embodies many of their best attributes. He is a servant leader who cares about the people on his team. He goes out of his way to encourage everyone (at ALL levels) to reach their full potential in life - even to become CEO themselves.Leaders like Adam will have positive lasting effects on peoples personal and business lives. I am very glad he has shared some of his knowledge and insight through this book.

Coffey clearly knows his stuff -- what works well, and what doesn't, for firms working with private equity. An eye-opening, inside view. A great window into the world of private equity as an option to consider for or your business. Very useful insights about how to make choices in this space -- what to do, and what not to do. Great!!!

While the author's primary audience is the the CEO or Executive, this is a must read for anyone in middle management whether your still climbing the ladder or not. Whether your with a big firm or a small outfit, you never really know when the company may be sold, and its very likely it could be to Private Equity. Mergers and Acquisitions are occurring at an increasingly rapid pace, and to Mr. Coffey's point, soon over 50% of those will be through PE firms.Understanding the shifting focus of both Ownership and Senior Management will help you direct your goals, strategies and decision making to be aligned. Having worked for both privately owned firms and PE owned firms, I wish this easy to understand tool was available earlier in my career. When other managers and employee's have a better understanding of the why's of decision making, such as what fall's above or below the line, the benefits of consultants, focus on EBITDA and the lifespan of typical hold periods, it creates more buy in on executing on those strategies. I highly recommend you make this part of your reference library, as I can already tell this will be a book I'll refer back to again and again.

Review

“After a class of diverse students selects books at the library, peppy rhyming verse by Degman (Norbert’s Big Dream) and whimsical digital-and-watercolor illustrations by Tentler-Krylov (Read-Aloud Classics: Peter Pan) integrate the chosen titles’ settings and subjects into the children’s lives, underscoring the ease and joy with which readers are transported by books (‘Hooray! I know how to read on my own!’). A girl reading My Big Book of Animals affectionately pets a moose sticking its head into her subway car while a dazzling menagerie looks on; a reader floating in a swimming pool filled with sea creatures pores over Shark Facts. Also spotlighted are more realistic scenarios: a boy grocery shopping with an adult peruses The Kid Chef, and a guitar-toting kid flips through a songbook at a music store. Welcome inclusions are a girl reading a book in Braille as she flies on a magic carpet over an exotic city (‘I read with my fingers across bumpy lines’), pictured alongside a child communicating with a sibling in sign language (‘I read with my voice or my hands, using signs’). A chipper, colorful celebration of the limitless possibilities for what, where, and when one can read.” —Publishers Weekly “Just read! It could be a command, a suggestion, or a declaration of accomplishment. Either way, this lively book is a delightful tribute to reading anything and everything all the time. The solitary act of reading is recast as a venture into worlds of people and lives far different from our own: ‘I read with an astronaut, pirate or farmer / I read with a clown or a knight wearing armor.’ Jaunty rhyming couplets bounce around the pages as the children in the illustrations read books, magazines, hand signs, road signs, maps, sheet music, and Braille. Vibrant watercolor illustrations are used to full effect, so that washes of blue transport a girl reading about sharks into a tropical seascape, and a boy reading about tigers sees the big cat’s fiery coat leaping from a pile of fall leaves. The diversity of reading material is matched by the diversity of readers, contexts, and interests. There’s something for everyone; there’s no holding back—just read!” —Booklist
