Patrick Madrid wrote a carefully researched book refuting slurs against the Catholic Church, the Magisterium, and false history. Madrid had the advantage of careful documentation and languages (Greek, Hebrew, and Latin). Madrid also had the advantage of being a good historian who could make connections and valid theses to support his book.Madrid began this book with a careful study of St. Peter's status as Pope. He carefully explained the sublties of St. Peter's name based on Greek and Hebrew languages. In other words, the Catholic authorities had a basis for considering St. Peter as the first Pope. Madrid even referred to Father Jaki (1924-2009) to substantiate Madrid's claim of St. Peter as Pope. Father Jaki was a well physicist and mathematician.Madrid did not conceal the fact that St. Peter was rebuked in New Testament literature. Madrid made the point that St. Peter was rebuked for misunderstanding and his actions rather than his teaching. Yet, St. Peter was important in New Testament literature as his name appears 195 times. When anti-Catholics cite St. Peter's weaknesses, Madrid was quick to show that many biblical heroic figures had weaknesses such as David.Madrid had fun with those who associate the number 666 with the Papacy. In the first place, the actual name for the Papacy via Roman numerals would add to 214. The 666 came from a mistake in the Pope's title which was finally corrected by editors early in the 20th. century. Madrid showed his knowledge of geography. The Vatican IS NOT in Rome. It is located across the Tiber River and is not offically a part of Rome. St. John's Revelation referred to the Emperor Nero and not to the Vatican.Madrid further demonstrated that the Papacy was the teaching authority as early as 80 AD. Pope St. ClementI(88-97)was recognized as the leader of the early Catholic Church. The point is that the early Catholic Church was in place with the Pope as the teaching authority. This is not to say that everyone agreed with the Pope's teaching authority, and Madrid cited early Church councils who deliberated points of theology, canonization of the Bible, etc. Madrid did not demand that readers agree with Catholic teaching, but he showed that decisions were carefully and thoughtfully made.Another myth that Madrid exploded was the myth of Pope Joan. Madrid was clear there NEVER was a Pope Joan. Madrid examined sources which indicated that Pope Sergius (904-911) may have referred as Pope Joan because Pope Sergius was supposedly influenced by women. Another possibility was Pope John VIII (872-882) was designated as a Pope Joan because he was a very weak Pope. The myth of Pope Joan emerged c. 1350 and then "gained steam" during the Reformation as propaganda.Madrid did an excellent job re Galileo (1564-1627). According to the transcripts and records, Galileo was NEVER tortured. He was not kept in a dungeon and resided in Niccolini's palacial estate. Niccolini was Turin's ambassador to the Vatican. Readers should note that Pope Paul V (1605-1621) honored Galileo in a public ceremony in 1610. Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644)also honored Galileo in 1624 via a public ceremony. Galileo had trouble because he tried to introduce his heliocentric theory as a substitute for the Bible. The Catholic Church authorities never interferred with the heliocentric theory as long as it was theory. At the time, Galileo could not prove his theory because of paralax, and he did not have a modern telescope. His theory of ocean tides was wrong. Galileo thought tides were due to the earth's rotation when we now know tides are due to the gravitation of the moon. Madrid could have added that while Galileo was honored by Popes Paul V and Urban VIII, Galileo was ungrateful and disrectful toward his benefactors.Madrid exploded another myth re the Popes and slavery. The only time the Popes did not condemn forced labor occured when Turkish POWs worked while they were prisoners. The following Popes issued severe condemnations and stinging rebukes against slavery:Pope Alexander VI (1492-1503)Pope Paul IV (1534-1549)Pope Benedict XIV(1740-1758)Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903)The list could continue. The condemnations were stern and very clear.Madrid had an interesting chapter re Papal Infallibility. Madrid carefully and clearly explained that Papal Infallibility only referred to matters of Morals and Faith. What should be known is that too often the claims of Papal Infallibility were exaggerated to mean something that was never intended. This doctrine was carefully decided and was questioned until the concept was clarified.The last chapter of the book demolished the myth of Hitler's Pope re Pope Pius XII (1939-1958). One of the Catholic criticims of the Hitler regime was titled Mit Brennender Sorge (With Burning Anxiety) which was a scathing denounciation of the Hitler regime's ideology and was written by Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli-the future Pope Pius XII. Madrid cited the NEW YORK TIMES praise of Pope Pius XII's Christmas messages in 1941 and 1942 attacking racism and war which was clearly aimed at the Hitler regime. Madrid cited the Jewish historian Pinchas Lapide's book titled THREE POPES AND THE JEWS which had high praise for Pope Pius XII's rare courage and aid he gave to Jewish refugees as early as 1940. Madrid cited Einstein's (1879-1955)praise of the Catholic Church in the December 23, 1940 edition of TIME (pages 38-41). Madrid examined the comments and praise of Rabbi Israel Zolli and Rabbi Herzog both of whom were the Chief Rabbi of Rome at different times. Madrid also cited sources of Pope Pius XII's work "world wide" to help refugees many of whom were Jewish and who later showed undying gratitude to Pope Pius XII.Madrid's book is based on serious scholarship and a sense of humor. The book is clearly written. This reviewer' only criticism of the book is that Madrid should have included Sir Martin Gilbert's books in defense of Pope Pius XII. Gilbert is a Jewish historian. Readers should consult Sister Marchione's books on behalf of Pope Pius XII. The book is readable and well researched.James E. Egolfoctober 12, 2010

Ignore the one star reviews, they are just mad that they have no answers to what this book contains. Excellent refutation of all the common fallacious arguments put forward by enemies of The Church.

Excellent apologetic work. Ranging from 2 or 3 pages to 10 or 15 for each "Pope Fiction" easily digestible bites for the casual reader. Well defended with historical sources and actual papal documents. Much of the defense is as the old quote goes about hating what you think the Church is versus not really when you know what the Church really is. This is really well written and well developed. A sense of humor and the sacred mixed together.

Clear, concise, humorous and well-balanced. This book presents excellent explanations about the myths of the Catholic papacy and answers many questions about it.

I delightfully found Patrick Madrid's book to be an excellent and clear, to the point understanding of issues that could easily get clouded over by historical misunderstanding. Mr. Madrid's obvious grasp of such sometimes confusing history and the theological framework underlying many of the issues makes this an excellent sourcebook to start from in understanding things as they happened without historical misunderstanding that can easily result from this kind of material. I applaud the skill with which he conveys the heart of the issues and uncovers the reasons why misunderstandings would happen about such issues.

I've not been particularly versed in the arguments between the papal detractors and the papal apologists, so this book was a good introduction to issues that arise in this argument. Madrid has done his research and often does a wonderful job of examining the bible, and how it relates directly to the papacy today. He takes pains to show how, even though the word Pope is never used in the Bible, the concept that began with Peter is valid through the ages.At the same time, the book is often frustrating. Madrid charges his opponents with lies begot from splitting hairs and interpretations. But often to defend the Papacy, he must resort to the same splitting of hairs for his cause. Sometimes the counter arguments border on "well yes, it is true, but that misses the point which is..." In his final chapter on the role of Pius XII and the Jews in World War II, while he makes some very good points and brings up facts that I was not aware of, shows the shortcoming of this book. The charges and rebuttals are almost too well chosen and written, so when he refutes the myths, he keeps his scope so narrow on the text of the misconception that sometimes his writing addresses the specifics without looking at the general argument. While a gross simplification - some of his arguments hinge on interpretations that are reminiscent of Clinton's denial of a relationship with Monica Lewinsky - cutting on semantics.Some of his rebuttals are extremely well written and certainly put to lie the charges as being false. But I wish he had kept to those, instead of some of the responses that required more narrow focus and verbal gymnastics. Still, and excellent resource on this topic.

I'm positive that many other ladies feel the same.I'd also love to see a woman's version!

I am on my second reading of this ebook. I am learning that many things I did were the wrong things to do like chasing my fiance' when she needed time away from me. Corey's book repeated emphasizes that is wrong to do but when you are in love and expect to lose that person not paying more attention that is what you do.I know now what would be the best things to do for both myself and keep my integrity as a man and what would be best for my lady too. Corey suggests reading this book 10-15 times for comprehension. I am not sure I will make that many times but will read it at least 6-7 times since I have better retention than most people that read.Independent of age the advice is applicable and I intend to use as much of the guidance it provides that I can.I recommend this ebook to any guy that is new to dated or been married a long time because the information pertains to all men.3% is a reference to the percentage of men that really understand women. Corey is spot on with his guidance...

i bought this book with the hope of attracting an ex back. truth is she came back, but by then I was so jazzed about what id learned that I didn't want it anymore. I feel a new confidence and new found self worth through my interactions with women as a male. I never realized how much I coud improve as ive usually been successful before reading this. the big message I took away was once I had this knowledge my self worth increased and other areas of my life I wanted to venture into where I had previously fear, became more of an exciting challenge to meet. totally recommend to any male that's ready to get a new view on love, attraction, and masculinity

Ok so I have read this book once, i will read it 10-15 times total as recomended. So far between corey’s videos on youtube and this book my confidence and success asking women out and having fun have improved dramatically. Just a month after finding corey on youtube. I’m telling every man I know about this!!! A good warm up book for guys who think they are so called nice guys may also be helpful. No more mr. Nice guy but that book does almost nothing to explain in detail how to be the way you really need to be...10’stars.

McQueen was a genius of design — not just of fashion, but of spectacle, drama, and political theater. This book attempts to represent all of that. The text is brilliant, covering the details of each of the shows as they unfold. One feels as if one is there.The illustrations are, unfortunately, limited (by copyright? by license?) and don't fully represent the power of the text.Nevertheless, this is perhaps one of the best insights into the rise and decline and rise and rise, and so on, of one of the world's greatest designers.

LOVE this book. I’m a fan of AMQ and this book is reasonably priced for how heavy and large it is. It looks great on my coffee table and my guests always ask about it. It’s nice to know a little bit about the history of my favorite designer. The pictures are gorgeous and it goes into depth about all of his runway shows up until his posthumous show.Warning: my mailman stuffed my book in a small mailbox instead of leaving it where packages should be picked up and I was pretty angry about that (not the amazon seller’s fault of course,) but after opening the package the book wasn’t ruined in any way. So it is pretty sturdy! :p

Excellent and interesting book chronicling Lee Alexander McQueen from just before graduation through his death, following his dear mother. Each collection is detailed, but I do so wish there were more photos of each collection. McQueen was such an amazingly innovative designer. Sarah Burton who now designs for McQueen's label just does not compare really (none of her fashions are shown in this book - it is all McQueen and biographical).

Why settle for eye candy when you can dig in to a full banquet of rich and satisfying imagery and design? I love looking at this book and as an artist, I find McQueen's creativity compelling and inspiring. The photography offers a more candid view of fashion as it happens on and behind the runway, and I personally enjoy the movement and spontaneity in many of the images.

This book describes each show and the significant details about staging it. It takes us through all of his groundbreaking extravaganzas with wonderful photographs.The thing to do is read the descriptions and look at the photos while watching the shows on Youtube.

Great publication. Gorgeous photos, shows each collection of McQueen. A must have for the die hard collector - or anyone interested in the history of McQueen's fashion.

I bought this as a gift and it is worth every penny. The layout is friendly for those looking to skim through photographs or read more about the late and great McQueen. This book does a great job of show casing his pivotal moments in fashion.

I am an avid backpacker, and I live not far from the PCT in Washington. Because I can't take time off from making a living to be a thru-hiker, I have been section hiking the Washington PCT for the past few years. When I can't be on the trail, I am an avid reader of "armchair adventures," especially books about the PCT. Over the years I've noticed a pattern in most PCT adventure books: the first 7/8 of the book describes travels through California, the next few chapters describe hiking through Oregon, and then there are a few token pages that basically say "and then it rained in Washington and then I reached Canada. The End" Keith Foskett's book gave more than a glancing blow to the beauty of the Washington PCT, which I greatly appreciated. I also appreciated the fact that he hiked his own hike, and even though he took an alternative route through parts of Oregon due to winter weather conditions, he felt--and I agree with him wholeheartedly--that he hiked the entire PCT. His trail companions came alive on the pages of this book, and his account was both humorous and introspective--without becoming a pity party. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

I found the author highly unlikable. Straight from the beginning he seems very egotistical. For example telling everyone he started with the PCT because he didn't want to be like everyone else and he doesn't conform to trends. Really?Just didn't enjoy it as much as i hoped because of his attitude.

Having read MANY books at the A.T. in my preparation for my hike inn 2016. I found his P.C.T. journal account funny and enlightening,It was not full of crazy stories (well, there are some) but the A.T. is like hiking the I-95 freeway (full of people) vs. the PCT, much more of a country road....at 12,000 ft. Some may criticize this book as being too descriptive and "flowery" but those who have awoken to a new day, filled with crimson, blues and orange and red skies... will be happy his accounts.I have read some reviews that felt he spent too much time drinking pale-ale in any town he could find. I find that absurd. Of course when you re-supply, you're going to down some pale ales. But most of his book, I felt, concentrated on the trail, and trail life.He ends his hike in an unusual fashion. Without going into detail, I felt he and his two cronies , were the "East Yorkshire Regiment" avoiding the Germans and the towns people were (underground) were sheltering and feeding them, and then on to their next objective - - 300 miles. You'd have to read the book to make sense of this rambling.In any event, walking from Mexico boarder to Canada is no SAMLL FEAT. Less than % 15 ever make it. It's difficult to make this kind of journey 'interesting' for the reader. After all, hiking that long is nothing but slogging one day after another. Repetition. He's writing style makes it 3-dimensional, with lot's of good stories; his observations on American food, people and geography etc, set it apart.To accomplish this monumental journey, one needs;1.) The heart and spirit of John Muir,2.) The tenacity and perseverance of Margaret Thatcher,3.) And the crazy and wildl sense of adventurer and humor of Steve Martin. I have had a longtime interest in long distance hiking trails, and was looking forward to reading this book, The Last Englishman, from the moment I heard it was an account of a hiker doing the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). While I found the book to be entertaining to read, the focus of the book seemed to be rather on the interesting characters on the trail (admittedly part of the PCT experience)and the towns and stopovers hikers can use to escape the trail, instead of the trail itself.Keith Foskett describes himself as someone who likes long hikes, yet I did not glean any appreciation for the fantastic and varied wilderness landscape through which the PCT passes in the book. Rather, it felt like the author's descriptions jumped from one small resupply town/depot to the next, with little time or appreciation for the trail itself, and the only focus was on surviving to the end.Though I enjoyed his writing style and humor, as an avid outdoorsman, I would not recommend this book to my hiking-interested friends.

After finishing Fozzie's first book (The Journey In Between, about thru-hiking El Camino de Santiago), I rolled straight into this one. It's really cool to go on another armchair adventure with the same hiker. I'm extremely grateful that he documented his multiple thru-hikes so I can live vicariously through them.Between these two books, the Camino seemed more charming, and the Pacific Crest Trail more rugged. The last leg of the journey was particularly page-turning, as winter set in and the trail was buried under snow. I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure, and there were some great characters along the way. (Pockets!!)Now I'm on to Fozzie's third installment, Balancing On Blue, where he tackles the Appalachian Trail.

Joel Stein grew up in Edison, N.J., and went to Stanford. From 1997-2017 he was a staff writer for Time magazine, writing a regular humor column and more than a dozen cover stories; he was also the back page columnist for Entertainment Weekly and the opinion section of The Los Angeles Times. I am 3 chapters in and can't understand how this has good reviews. There are sentences that aren't complete which is not the biggest issue. The book starts off talking about machine learning before getting into data analysis which all is a bit too much for a beginner's guide. I have taken other programming courses in the past and none of them jump right into the deep end of the pool like this book. The fact that the book references images that aren't in the book is just crazy. How does a book (I have paperback) get published like this? And it says to load a CSV file into python yet doesn't say where to get the file from or how to load it into python. Again this book says it's a beginner's guide so where is the explanation on how to do these things? I realize I can Google how to do all these things but then what is the point of this book? Waste of money or maybe a good fire if I get too cold.

Although there are some potentially useful concepts in this book, it is in places impossible to understand because the author apparently has little understanding of grammar and syntax, and invents words (what does "performant" mean, for example). By writing in a stream-of-consciousness, barely-literate fashion, the author shows outright disrespect for the reader and, worst, demonstrates that he or she simply doesn't care. Sometimes I have to map out sentences, try to deconstruct the gibberish, and then guess as to what the author was trying to say. After wading through three sections of this book, I came to suspect that the author has no concept of programming in general, or Python in particular, and is obfuscating a lack of technical knowledge with completely-nonsensical writing. I had to abandon reading this. It was a waste of my time.

When it deals with a subject, it not only tells you how things work but also why they work that way. It helped me gain a deeper understanding of the language. It also helped me think about how to structure my code. The examples and case studies are very broad in terms of practical coverage and they themselves are good learning materials as well. This is a real book well worth the money, unlike some other books out there which in some cases are simply copy and paste from different sources.

The grammar in this book is atrocious. Sometimes sentences make no sense at all and I was left scratching my head trying to piece it together. I am positive large parts of the book were just copy and paste from a website trying to sell products.

The examples and case studies are very broad in terms of practical coverage and they themselves are good learning materials as well. This is a real book well worth the money, unlike some other books out there which in some cases are simply copy and paste from different sources. It is written simply enough for him to understand, but still covers the important things. Glad I bought it.

Rating restaurants (and hotels) is a notoriously difficult business. No matter what you do, there will be some very valid criticisms. It is therefore truly remarkable how consistent and deservedly well-respected Michelin guides in Europe are. While nobody could agree with every rating, there is really nothing better, and hasn't been for a very long time.Unfortunately, the quality of the Guides decrease the further from Paris you go. The American ones are still quite usable, but are not as good as the competition. The Guides in Asia are hardly worth opening.The reviewers in Hong Kong and Macau were clearly not the best European reviewers period, but they were also still European, and so had difficulty reviewing any kind of Chinese cuisine. At the end of the day, Michelin simply ranked the places with established names high, and less famous ones low. Tastes may differ, but it is impossible to imagine that there exists a single person in the food-eating world that would give three stars to Robuchon in Macau while giving less to the ones in New York and Paris. And I don't think there is a single person who lived in Hong Kong for more than a year that would place Lung King Heen (a decent but very white-tourist-oriented restaurant in Four Seasons) as the top Cantonese restaurant in the city.This said, the guide follows famous touristy places rather well. If you are visiting Hong Kong for the first time, and have nowhere to turn for advice, this guide is probably better than nothing. You might end up spending more money, and eating much less well than you could, but at least you won't be completely lost. Which is the only reason I give this guide two stars rather than one.

Jay Adams’s stepfather Kent Sherwood is an aerospace engineer and photographer and one of the founders of Z-Flex Skateboards. Legendary skateboarder Tony Alva is most prominently known as one of the original Z-Boys. C. R. Stecyk III is a multimedia artist and writer. He was a writer and production designer on the documentary film Dogtown and Z-Boys. Stecyk cofounded the Zephyr atelier. Glen E. Friedman is a celebrated skate, hip-hop, and punk photographer. He is the author of My Rules.

Purchased this for my husband long time Dogtown supporter loved it loved it loved it

totally enjoyed this book. I have been a fan of Jay Adams since he first appeared in the 70s. This book is a must for Jay Adams fans and skateboarding fans...especially from the Z Boys era in the 70s.

Great look into the early years of a legend.

I've been waiting for a book like this on Jay Adams for a long time, very cool images and I love the personal touch by Jay as well. I miss Jay every day, i'm glad his legacy will live on through style and books like this.
